St. Joseph, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University baseball team fell in a tight contest at Missouri Western on Saturday 4-3. With the loss SBU drops to 9-5 (1-4 MIAA) on the season.
The Bearcats were the first to strike in the top of the second inning. After two outs to open up the inning,
Nelson Muniz drew a walk followed by a
Cody Massey single to center field and an rbi single through the right side by
Blake Hobbs which gave SBU a 1-0 lead. The Griffons answered back with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning, but SBU would quickly tie the game in the top of the third. With one out
Chance Wolfe drew a full count walk and was brought home on an rbi triple from
Hunter Hisky to tie the game at 2-2.
However, Missouri Western would again respond in the bottom half of the inning, re-taking the lead 3-2. MWSU would tack another run on in the seventh before the Bearcats would mount a comeback in the top of the ninth. With two outs in the ninth, Muniz drew another walk and came home on an rbi double down the left field line by Massey to pull the Bearcats within one. However Massey would be stranded at second as the Bearcats would fall 4-3.
SBU will return to action on Sunday, March 5 for the final game of the three-game series against Missouri Western. Opening pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. from St. Joseph, Missouri.
