Pittsburg, Kan. – The Southwest Baptist University softball team split a pair of MIAA conference games with nationally recongized Pitt State. SBU improves to 22-8 (6-2 MIAA) on the season,
In game one Pittsburg State would jump out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1
st inning. In the bottom of the 3
rd inning PSU would get two more runs extending their lead to 3-0.
Alexis Dock would double in the top of the 5
th inning, and
Jaidyn Mawhinney would follow with a 2-out single putting runners on the corners. SBU would be unable to push across a run and would trail 3-0 going to the bottom of the 5
th inning, however PSU would score a run and take a 4-0 lead into the 6
th inning.
Megan Schellert would open the inning with a single giving her a 3-3 day,
Lauren Strobel would follow with a 2-out walk. Unfortunately the Bearcats would come up empty and would still trail 4-0. PSU would add a run in the 6
th inning increasing their lead to 5-0. Dock would open the 7
th inning with a walk, and
Catlin Evans would get a 2-out base hit giving SBU runners on 1
st and 2
nd. The Bearcats would not be able to score and would fall 5-0.
In game two SBU would come out swinging, as Mawhinney and Evans would open the game with back-to-back singles. After a sacrifice bunt from Schellert which would move the runners to 2
nd and 3
rd,
Dana Graves would pick up an RBI with a ground out and SBU would go up 1-0. In the bottom of the 1
st inning PSU would tie the game on a bases loaded single and we would go to the 2
nd inning with the score 1-1.
Darien Robinson and Dock would hit back-to-back singles in the 2
nd inning, but a double play would end the threat and the game would remain tied. The Gorillas would add a run in the bottom of the 2
nd and would take a 2-1 lead into the 3
rd inning. Each team would go quietly in the 3
rd inning, but SBU would score in the 4
th. Strobel would double and then
Darien Robinson would drive her in with a double of her own tying the game at 2.
Kaley Hansen would pinch run for Robinson and would score on a Dock sacrifice fly giving SBU a 3-2 lead. In the top of the 5thi inning SBU Mawhinney and Evans would reach to start the inning, and then Schellert would drive Mawhinney in with an RBI single to center field. SBU would increase their lead to 4-2. Strobel would pick up a big 2-out base hit that would drive in two more runs and SBU would take a 6-2 lead into the bottom of the 5
th inning.
Claire Miller would shut the Gorillas down in order, and SBU would take a 6-2 lead into the 6
th inning. Dock would lead off the top of the 6th inning with a homerun increasing SBU's lead to 7-2. Miller would finish the game leading SBU to a victory and she would pick up her 7th win on the season.
The Bearcats will be back in action on Friday, March 31st when they travel to Maryville, Mo. to take on Northwest Missouri in a conference doubleheader. First pitch for game one is set for 2:00 PM from Maryville, Mo.
