Bolivar, Mo. – The Southwest Baptist University baseball team picked up a three-game sweep over Lindenwood on Monday afternoon, taking the final game in the series 12-3. With the win the Bearcats improve to 18-8 (8-7 MIAA) on the season.
Opening up the game Lindenwood plated the first run in the top of the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead to the bottom of the first. In SBU's at-bat
Caleb Sneed and
Chance Wolfe led the game off with back-to-back singles.
Hunter Hisky then blasted a three-run homerun to right field to give the Bearcats a 3-1 lead. Lindenwood added another run in the second, but the Bearcats responded in the bottom of the third.
With one out in the inning, Wolfe singled to center, stole second, and came home on an rbi triple from Hisky. Lindenwood got another run back in the top of the fourth, but an rbi single from Sneed extended the Bearcat lead back to three at 6-3.
After a scoreless fifth for the Lions, the Bearcats went back to work in the bottom half of the inning. After two outs in the inning, the Bearcats loaded the bases with a single from
Jovany Urbieta, an
Andrew Meier walk, and a hit batsman. Urbieta came home on a wild pitch, while
Cody Massey doubled home Meier and
Clint Jack to extend the lead to 9-3.
Two more scoreless innings followed before the Bearcats added more runs in the bottom of the eighth. Hisky blasted his second homerun of the game to right field, giving SBU a 10-3 lead before back-to-back-to-back singles from Murley,
Nelson Muniz, and Meier loaded the bases. Jack then hit a two-rbi single to right field to send the Bearcats into the ninth up 12-3.
Chance Wolfe came in to shut down the Lions in order to seal the 12-3 victory.
Hunter Hisky had an outstanding game at the plate, going 3-5 with 2 homeruns, a triple, and 5 runners batted in. Hisky's 11 total bases ties him for the 4th most total bases in a single game in SBU history.
Jovany Urbieta also went 3-5 with a pair of runs scored, while five other Bearcats picked up two hits in the win. On the mound
Drew Wagner picked up the win by throwing 6.0 innings allowing two earned runs with three strikeouts.
The Bearcats will return to action on Tuesday, March 28 when they travel to Arkansas-Fort Smith. Opening pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. from Fort Smith, Arkansas.
