Bearcats Toss Two Shutouts in Doubleheader Sweep of UNK

Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University Softball team pick up two MIAA wins over Nebraska-Kearney on Friday afternoon. With the wins SBU improves to 19-7 (3-1 MIAA) on the season. 

In game one SBU would open up the scoring in the bottom of the 1st inning, Jaidyn Mawhinney would lead off with a walk. UNK would commit an error which would allow Mawhinney to score all the way from 1st base giving SBU a 1-0 lead. Dana Graves would get a base hit up the middle and SBU would have runners on the corners with only one away, Stormy Christerson would drive in a run with a double to left field increasing the SBU lead to 2-0. Lauren Strobel would draw a walk to load the bases, following two more Loper errors SBU would take a 4-0 lead into the 2nd inning. Kacey Ayers-Evans was tremendous in the circle for the Bearcats as she would shut down UNK and would not allow a hit until the 6th inning. Ayers-Evans would complete her 5th shutout of the season and would improve to 11-3 on the season. 

In game two Claire Miller would strike out five of the first six batters she faced and the game would be scoreless heading into the bottom of the 2nd inning. In the bottom of the inning Christerson would open the inning with a base hit to center field. Strobel would follow with a base to right and SBU would have runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs. After a wild pitch and a walk to Alexis Dock the bases would be loaded for Kori Hillenburg, and Hillenburg would bring in the 1st run of the game on a fielder's choice. Mawhinney would follow with an RBI single plus a Loper error and SBU would take a 3-0 lead. the Lopers would commit one more error and a wild pitch in the inning and the Bearcats would take a 5-0 lead into the 3rd inning. Miller would cruise through the next two inning collecting 4 more strikeouts, and in the bottom of the 4th inning SBU would take on a run with an RBI base hit from Graves. UNK would not score in the top of the 5th inning leaving the SBU lead at 6-0. Strobel would double to start the bottom half of the inning, and would score on an RBI base hit from Kelcee Welch. The 7-0 SBU lead would be the final score of the game, with the win SBU has allowed one run over their last three games. 

SBU pitching was terrific in the doubleheader sweep; Kacey Ayers-Evans threw a completer game shutout and added 6 strikeouts. Claire Miller threw six innings allowing 3 hits, but she struck out 13 batters. Hunter Middleton tossed an inning of relief and allowed one base runner. 

The Bearcats will be back in action on Sunday, March 26th when the hose Fort Hays State in an MIAA doubleheader. First pitch for game one is set for 2 PM form the SBU Softball Field in Bolivar, Mo.
