Kansas City Mo. – The Southwest Baptist University softball split a pair of games at Rockhurst on Wednesday afternoon. Following the games SBU improves to 17-7 (1-1 MIAA) on the season.
In game
Jaidyn Mawhinney would start the game with a base hit and would advance to 2nd base on a wild pitch, however SBU would not be able to score.
Kacey Ayers-Evans would strike out four of the first batters she faced and would hold Rockhurst scoreless through the first two innings.
Lauren Strobel would lead off the top of the 5th inning with a base hit through the right side, but the Bearcats would fail to score. In the bottom of the 6th inning RU would push across a run to take a 1-0 lead over SBU and would go on to win the game by that score. Mawhinney would go 3-3 from the plate during the contest. In the circle Ayers-Evans would throw 6.0 innings and would strike out 7.
In game two Mawhinney would continue her hot streak as she would get a base hit to open up the game and would give her 4 straight hits. In the bottom of the 1st inning RU would get a run and take a 1-0 lead into the 2nd inning.
Stormy Christerson would lead off the top of the 2nd inning with a base hit, and
Alexis Dock would follow with a double. The Bearcats would have runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out in the inning.
Kaley Hansen would get an RBI on a sacrifice bunt to tie the game at 1. The game would remain tied through the 7th inning and would go into extra innings. In the top of the 8th inning
Kori Hillenburg would be placed on 2nd base to start the inning because of the international tie breaker rules. Mawhinney would lead off with a bunt single and SBU would have runners on the corners with nobody out.
Catlin Evans would give SBU the lead with an RBI fielder's choice.
Claire Miller would retire the Hawks in order in the bottom of the inning to secure SBU's 2-1 victory. Miller was dominant in the circle as she threw a complete game and had 11 strikeouts.
The Bearcats will return to action on Friday, March 24 when they host Nebraska-Kearney in an MIAA doubleheader. First pitch for game one is set for 1 PM from the SBU Softball Field in Bolivar, Mo.
