Kirksville, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University baseball team picked up an 8-6 non-conference victory over Truman State on Wednesday. With the win, the Bearcats improve to 15-8 on the season.
After a scoreless first inning, the Bearcats were the first to strike in the top of the second.
Andrew Meier and
Clint Jack led the inning off with back-to-back singles and both moved up a base on a sacrifice before
Blake Hobbs hit a sacrifice fly to score Meier and give SBU a 1-0 lead. Â After two more scoreless innings, SBU added four more runs in the top of the fifth. Hobbs led the inning off with a walk, advanced to second on a groundout, and came home on an rbi single down the left field line by
Chance Wolfe to extend the lead to 2-0.
Sean Murley was hit by a pitch two batters later, and came home on a three run homerun by
Nelson Muniz as the Bearcats lead grew to 5-0. Truman State responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning, as SBU held a slim 5-4 lead.
In the top of the sixth the Bearcats again plated two more runs. Jack led the inning off with an infield single before
Cody Massey reached on a fielder's choice coupled with an error. After a sacrifice but advanced both runners, Wolfe came through with a single to center field to score both runners and extend the SBU lead to 7-4. The Bulldogs added another run in the seventh before SBU scored a run on a wild pitch, followed in the ninth by an unearned run by TSU, but in the end the Bearcats would pick up an 8-6 victory.
Calvin Lovig picked up the victory out of the bullpen, while
Chance Wolfe earned his third save of the year.
Clint Jack picked up a game high 3 hits, while
Hunter Hisky and
Chance Wolfe both had 2 hits in the win.
SBU will return to action on Saturday, March 25 when they open up a three-game series against Lindenwood. Opening pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. from Dodson Field in Bolivar.
