Tahlequah, Okla. - The Southwest Baptist University baseball team fell at Northeastern State on Saturday afternoon 11-9. With the loss SBU drops to 14-7 (5-6 MIAA) on the season.
Northeastern State jumped out of the gate quickly, putting up seven runs in the bottom of the first as the Bearcats trailed 7-0 heading into the top of the second. SBU started to chip away at the lead in the second, as
Nelson Muniz drew a one out walk followed by a two-run homerun to right field by
Andrew Meier. Clink Jack then singled up the middle, followed by a walk from
Caleb Sneed two batters later. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch followed by a two-rbi single up the middle by
Chance Wolfe as the Bearcats trailed 7-4.
SBU continued to chip away at the RiverHawk lead in the top of the third when
Jovany Urbieta led the inning off with a solo homerun to left field, bringing the Bearcats within two at 7-5.
Sean Murley singled to center, followed by a Muniz walk and an rbi double from Meier to cut the deficit to one. SBU then tied the game two batters later on an rbi single up the middle by Massey, but NSU answered back with a run in the bottom half of the inning as SBU trailed 8-7.
The Bearcats took their first lead of the game in the top of the fourth as a Hisky double, Urbieta walk, and Murley single loaded the bases. Meier then hit an rbi single to left field, tying the game at 8-8, and the Bearcats would take the lead on an NSU error as SBU took a 9-8 lead into the bottom half of the inning. However, NSU would score three runs over the next four innings as the Bearcats would eventually fall 11-9.
Andrew Meier continued his strong weekend going 3-5 with 4 rbi and a homerun, while
Hunter Hisky went 4-5 on the day.
SBU will close out their three-game series at Northeastern State on Sunday, March 19. Opening pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. from Tahlequah, Oklahoma.
