Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University Softball Team picked up two victories over William Jewell on Wednesday afternoon. Following the wins SBU improves to 16-6 (1-1 MIAA) on the season.
Game one would start out slow as both teams would go scoreless in the 1st inning, however SBU would take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd.
Dana Graves would start the inning getting hit by a pitch and would advance to 2nd base on a wild pitch.
Stormy Christerson would get a base hit advancing Graves to 3rd base. Christerson would swipe 2nd base, then
Darien Robinson would drive both runners in with a 2-RBI base hit up the middle. William Jewell would go down in order in the 3rd inning, and in the bottom of the inning
Jaidyn Mawhinney would start the inning with a base hit to left field. Mawhinney would advance to 2nd on a sacrifice bunt from
Catlin Evans.
Megan Schellert would single up the middle putting runners on the corners. Graves would pick up an RBI with a sacrifice bunt giving SBU a 3-0 lead. Christerson would collect an RBI on a single to right field increasing SBU's lead to 4-0. Following a single and stolen base from
Lauren Strobel SBU would have runners on 2nd and 3rd, but Robinson would clear the bases with a triple down the right field line giving SBU a 6-0 lead. WJC would once again go scoreless in the 4th inning, however
Kori Hillenburg would lead off with a walk in the bottom of the inning, Hillenburg would come around to score on an RBI double from Schellert and SBU would lead 7-0.Â
Kacey Ayers-Evans would shut down the Cardinals over the final three innings only allowing 2 base runners. With the victory Avers-Evans improves to 10-2 on the season and her ERA drops to 1.50.
In game two neither team could push across a run over the first two innings, but in the bottom of the 3rd inning SBU would take a 1-0 lead. Mawhinney would double down the left field line to open the inning, and would come around to score on a William Jewell error.
Claire Miller would hold the Cardinals scoreless over the next two innings and SBU would hold onto a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the 5th inning. Hillenburg would hit a double off of the wall in left center field and Mawhinney would reach on a fielder's choice. After Mawhinney stole second base another Jewell error would allow both runner to score and SBU would increase their lead to 3-0. William Jewell would get their first run of the day in the top of the 6th inning and would cut the SBU lead to 3-1. SBU would respond in the bottom of the 6th inning when Strobel would hit a homerun off of the scoreboard in left center field which made the SBU lead 4-1. In the top of the 7th inning William Jewell would tie the game at 4, and with 2-outs SBU would bring
Hunter Middleton on in relief. Middleton would throw one pitch to get the final out of the inning. Evans and Schellert would open the bottom of the inning with singles and SBU would have runners on 1st and 2nd. Graves would single up the middle which would bring in Evans, and SBU would win the game 5-4. Middleton would pick up the victory improving her record to 3-2 on the season.
Offensively SBU was lead by
Megan Schellert who had 4 hits on the day, while
Stormy Christerson and
Darien Robinson would each have 3. Robinson would collect 4 RBI's to lead the Bearcats. In the circle
Kacey Ayers-Evans would toss her 4th complete game shutout of the season and would strike out 6.
Claire Miller would throw 6 2/3 innings and would strike out 8.
Hunter Middleton would throw 1/3 of an inning in relief, however she would pick up the victory in game 2.
The Bearcats will return to action Wednesday, March 22 when they travel to Rockhurst for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch for game one is set for 2 PM form Kansas City Mo.
