SBU Advances to MIAA Quarterfinals with 68-56 Victory Over Washburn

Topeka, Ks. – The Southwest Baptist University Women's basketball team defeated Washburn 68-56 to advance to the MIAA Tournament Quarterfinals.  With the win SBU improves to 16-13 on the season.

Washburn would get the first basket of the game, however SBU would respond with a 9-0 run. During the run Alex Botkin would hit a three followed by two jumpers from Morgan Henderson and a jumper from Aliyah Isaac. SBU would take a 9-2 lead with 7:32 remaining in the opening quarter. A quick 4-0 Washburn would make the score 9-6 in favor of the Bearcats. Isaac would hit two free throws to extend the lead to 11-6. SBU would outscore Washburn 6-5 to end the period and would take a 17-11 lead into the 2nd quarter.

Kameron Schaaf would hit a three to open up the scoring in the 2nd quarter and extend the SBU lead to 20-11. Washburn would answer with a 5-0 run cutting the SBU lead to 20-16. Megan Rosenbohm would end the run with a jumper, after a Caylee Richardson layup and another jumper from Rosenbohm SBU would extend their lead to 26-18 with 6:20 left in the half. Washburn would outscore SBU 10-9 to end the half, but the Bearcats would head into the locker room with a 35-31 lead.

Washburn would get the 1st basket of the 2nd half and SBU's lead would be down to 35-33. Richardson and Rosenbohm would go on a 5-0 run to increase SBU's lead to 40-33. WU would have a 5-0 run of their own and SBU's lead would be cut to 40-38 with 6:12 left in the quarter. The teams would trade baskets to end the quarter and SBU would cling to a 47-45 lead heading to the 4th quarter.

Rosenbohm would hit back-to-back threes to open the 4th quarter and would increase the Bearcat lead to 53-45. With 4:31 remaining in the game Mackenzie Skupa would hit a three and SBU would go up by 10 at 60-50. Rosenbohm would hit six free throws down the stretch and would help seal SBU's victory. SBU would win the game 68-56.

SBU was led in scoring by Megan Rosenbohm with 22, while Aliyah Isaac added 12 and Caylee Richardson with 8. Rosenbohm led SBU with 7 rebounds and Morgan Henderson paced SBU with 7 assists.

The Bearcats will be back in action on Friday, March 3rd when the play Central Missouri in the quarterfinals on the MIAA Tournament. Tipoff for the game is set for 2:30 PM from Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo.
