Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University baseball team picked up an 11-10 victory over Maryville on Sunday afternoon, winning the weekend series 3-1. With the win SBU improves to 6-1 on the season.
Maryville jumped out early on the Bearcats, taking a 3-0 lead after the first inning of play. After a pair of scoreless innings for SBU, the Bearcats got on the board in the bottom of the 3rd.
Andrew Meier and
Cody Massey led the inning off with back-to-back singles, followed by an rbi double from
Caleb Sneed to cut the deficit to 3-1. After a
Chance Wolfe walk, Massey came home on a fielder's choice while Sneed came around to score on a throwing error to tie the game at 3-3.
Clint Jack then stole second, advanced to third on a groundout, and came home on a balk to give SBU a 4-3 lead.
MU responded with runs in the 4th, 5th, and 6th before SBU tacked on four runs in the bottom half of the 6th.
Jovany Urbieta led the inning off with a double down the right field line, followed two batters later by a pinch hit triple from
Blake Hobbs to pull SBU within one at 6-5. Sneed then blasted a two-run homerun to left center to put SBU back on top 7-6. Two batters later Jack doubled to left center, followed by a triple to center by
Sean Murley as SBU took an 8-6 lead to the 7th. Maryville answered back with four runs of their own in the top half of the 7th before the Bearcats came back to tie it at 10-10.
Urbieta drew a two out walk, followed by a double down the left field line by Meier to put runners on second and third.
Chaz Verduzco hit an rbi groundout, scoring Urbieta, followed by a Sneed walk and a Wolfe rbi single to right field tied the game at 10-10. After a scoreless top of the 8th by Maryville, the Bearcats broke the tie in the bottom half of the inning. Using a
Nelson Muniz walk,
Hunter Hisky double, and Meier intentional walk the Bearcats loaded the bases when Verduzco was hit by a pitch to bring home the game winning run. On the mound
Chance Wolfe picked up the victories by throwing 3.0 innings while allowing 1 earned run.
The Bearcats will be back in action on Tuesday, February 21 when they host Arkansas-Fort Smith. Opening pitch of the 9-inning game is set for 2:00 p.m. from Dodson Field in Bolivar.
