SBU Offense Tallies 13 Runs in Victories Over Drury and Fort Hays

Bentonville, Ark. – The Southwest Baptist University Softball team collected two more wins on Saturday as they defeated Drury 7-2 and Fort Hays State 6-0. SBU improves to 6-2 on the season.

In game one Drury would jump out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning, but the Bearcats would respond in the bottom of the inning. Kori Hillenburg would start the inning with a walk, following that Jaidyn Mawhinney would single advancing Hillenburg to second base. Lauren Strobel would double that would score both Hillenburg and Mawhinney and would tie the game at 2. After a throwing error by Drury Catlin Evans would double in 2 more runs and SBU would take a 4-2 lead. Stormy Christerson would add an RBI double and SBU would have a 5-2 lead after the first inning. Kacey Ayers-Evans would settle in and retire the next nine batters she faced. In the bottom of the 5th Strobel would double and Catlin Evans would drive her in with an RBI single. Evans would steal second and would come around to score on an RBI double from Megan Schellert giving SBU a 7-2 lead. Ayers-Evans would strike out 5 of the final six batters and SBU would win 7-2. Ayers-Evans finished the game with 8 strikeouts and improves to 4-1 on the season.

Game two would start out much like game one with Hillenburg and Mawhinney getting on base to open the game. Dana Graves would draw a walk to load the bases then Evans would get an RBI when she was hit by a pitch. Schellert would add an RBI groundout and SBU would lead 2-0 going into the bottom of the 1st inning. Hunter Middleton would keep Fort Hays off of the scoreboard in the first two innings, then Graves would hit a homerun to give SBU a 3-0 lead in the 3rd inning. Joely Gage would homer in the top of the 4th giving the Bearcats a 4-0 lead, and the Bearcats would add another run on a Fort Hays error making the score 5-0. In the top of the 6th Gage would draw a walk and Kaley Hansen would pinch run for her, coming around to score on a Strobel RBI single giving SBU a 6-0 lead. Claire Miller would come in and pitch 4.2 shutout innings and would strike out 10 batters. Miller would pick up the win and improve to 1-0 on the season.

The Bearcats will return to action Sunday February, 19 as they finish the 8-State classic. SBU will play Wayne State and Illinois- Springfield. First pitch against Wayne State is set for 9 AM from Bentonville, Ark.
