Emporia, Kan. - The Southwest Baptist University women's basketball team hung tight with #13 Emporia State for a majority of the way, but the Bearcats would end up falling 84-67 on Thursday evening. With the loss SBU drops to 14-11 (6-10 MIAA) on the season.
Emporia State jumped on top early, and after two baskets from Calyee Richardson the Bearcats were trailing 6-4 with 6:57 left in the opening quarter. ESU used a 6-0 run to push their lead to 8 at 12-4 before buckets from
Megan Rosenbohm and Alyiah Isaac cut the deficit back to four at 12-8. ESU answered back with an 11-2 run, as SBU trailed 23-10 with 2:29 remaining in the quarter before the Bearcats trailed 25-15 heading into the second quarter.
Kiana Peterson opened up the second quarter with a jumper, cutting the Emporia lead back to single digits at 25-17. ESU responded with a pair of baskets before a Rosenbohm three sparked an 8-2 run to pull SBU within six at 31-25 with 4:20 left in the half. The two teams exchanged points for the remainder of the half as SBU went into the break trailing 37-31.
Opening up the second half the two teams continued to exchange points, and after SBU trailed 44-35, the Bearcats reeled off a 5-0 run to pull within four at 44-40. ESU answered back to push their lead back to 10 at 52-42, but the Bearcats pulled back within five after free throws from
Alex Botkin and Isaac coupled with a jumper from
Mackenzie Skupa. After the two teams exchanged free throws with one second remaining, SBU went into the final quarter trailing 54-49.
In the final quarter Emporia State pushed their lead to nine, but a Botkin three brought SBU back within six at 58-52 with 8:51 remaining. A Botkin free throw cut the deficit to five with 6:54 remaining, but was the closest the Bearcats would get as they would eventually fall 84-67.
Megan Rosenbohm had a team high 16 points while
Caylee Richardson had 15 points and
Aliyah Isaac chipped in 13 points. As a team SBU shot 40.4% from the field, 26.7% from beyond the arc, and 77.8% from the line.
SBU will return to action on Saturday, February 18 when they travel to Washburn. Tip-off is set for 5:00 p.m. from Lee Arena in Topeka, Kansas.
