Bearcat Baseball Completes Series Sweep Against Southern Nazarene

Bethany, Okla. - The Southwest Baptist University baseball team completed the series sweep over Southern Nazarene on Saturday afternoon, taking game one of the double-header 11-9 followed by an 11-6 game two victory. After the weekend the Bearcats start the season 3-0.

SBU once again took an early lead against SNU, jumping ahead 2-0 after a half inning of play. Caleb Sneed led the game off with a single to left field, followed by a single to right field by Chance Wolfe, and an rbi single from Clint Jack gave SBU their first run of the day. Two batters later Nelson Muniz hit an rbi groundout as the Bearcats led 2-0 after a half inning of play. However, SNU would respond with a three-run inning, as the Bearcats would trail 3-2 heading into the second inning.

After a scoreless second, SBU re-took the lead in the top of the third. With two outs in the inning Jack was hit by a pitch, Sean Murley singled to center, and a walk by Muniz loaded the bases. Hunter Hisky then hit a two-rbi single through the right side, followed by an rbi single through the left side by Jovany Urbieta to give SBU a 5-3 lead. A double steal by Urbieta and Hisky gave the Bearcats their sixth run of the game with a 6-3 lead. Southern Nazarene answered back with three in the third, and another in fourth, as SBU trailed 7-6 heading to the fifth inning.

Both teams would be scoreless for the next two innings before SBU re-took the lead in the top of the seventh. With runners on the corners and one out, Wolfe hit a sacrifice fly which scored Blake Hobbs to tie the game at 7-7. Jack singled to right center, putting runners on the corners, before Murley hit an rbi infield single to give SBU an 8-7 lead. The score would remain 8-7 until the top of the ninth when SBU added three more insurance runs. The Bearcats loaded the bases with two outs where Muniz drew an rbi walk, followed by a two-rbi single from Hisky to take an 11-7 lead. Southern Nazarene added two runs in the bottom half of the inning, but the Bearcats came away with the 11-9 victory. On the mound Jay Kaufman picked up the victory with 6.1 innings out of the bullpen while striking out 7.

In game two the Bearcats once again jumped out to the early lead. After scoreless innings by both teams, the Bearcats used three straight singles from Hisky, Urbieta, and Hobbs to take a 1-0 lead. SNU went down in order in the second before the Bearcats added to their lead in the third. Sneed led the inning off with a single to left field, and two batters later Jack reached on an error to put runners on first and second. With two outs Muniz triped down the right field line to extend the Bearcat lead to 3-0. SNU responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning as SBU led 3-2 after three.

SBU tacked on 7 more runs in the top of the fifth, extending the lead to 10-2. Muniz hit an rbi single up the middle, followed by a Hisky rbi single up the middle, a two-rbi double from Urbieta, a two-rbi triple from Cody Massey, and capped off with a sacrifice fly by Sneed. Massey would add another rbi single in the seventh as SBU went on to the 11-6 victory. On the mound Calvin Lovig picked up the victory with 4.0 innings of work out of the bullpen.

The Bearcats will host Maryville in a 4-game series beginning on Friday, February 17 in SBU's home opener. Opening pitch of the single 9-inning game on Friday is set for 2:00 p.m. from Dodson Field.
