Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University Bearcats (7-2, 0-1 MIAA) will play their second MIAA contest of the season on the road Saturday afternoon against Northeastern State (4-4, 1-2 MIAA).
Previewing the Bearcats
The Bearcats are 7-2 on the season. In their last outing, the Bearcats were defeated by #25 Central Oklahoma, 85-68. Their most recent win came in comeback fashion on the road against Rogers State. Over their nine games, the Bearcats are averaging 83.3 ppg while shooting 82.2% as a team from the line. The 83.3 ppg ranks 8th in the entire NCAA and the 82.2% free throw percentage ranks 3rd in the nation. Megan Rosenbohm and Caylee Richardson make the Bearcats go. Rosenbohm is the 10th best scorer in the NCAA and leading scorer in the MIAA with 22.7 ppg. She also collects 5.6 rpg, 3.0 apg, and 2.8 spg. Caylee Richardson averages a near double double with 16.0 ppg and 9.2 rpg on a scorching 60.2% from the field and 92.5% at the line.
Previewing the Riverhawks
Northeastern State enters this matchup with a 4-4 (1-2 MIAA) record. The Riverhawks opened MIAA play last weekend, going 1-1 over those two games. This past Tuesday, December 5th, they played fellow MIAA opponent Central Oklahoma and lost to the Bronchos by a final score of 55-46. The Riverhawks are led by the two-headed attack of Cailyn Long and Destiny Strange. Long comes off the bench and averages a team leading 11.6 ppg on 45.7% shooting from deep. Strange averages 11.1 ppg with 4.0 rpg. As a team, the Riverhaws score 68.9 ppg on 41.7% shooting and give up 69.0 ppg.
The Coaches
SBU head coach
Kelsey Keizer is in her fourth season on the Bearcat bench after leading SBU back to the MIAA Tournament in Kansas City for the first time in three years. Coach Keizer led the Bearcats to back-to-back winning seasons (16-14, 7-12 MIAA last year) in 2015-16 and 2016-17. A feat that had not been done since the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons. Coach Keizer holds a career coaching record of 50-47 and a 22-39 mark in the MIAA.
Fala Bullock is in her first year as was named head women's basketball coach for Northeastern State. Bullock spent the last four seasons at Division II Armstrong State University, where she recorded a career mark of 60-52. With six years of head coaching experience, Bullock is 98-74 overall and within conference play she is 61-53.
All-Time Series
Southwest Baptist has the advantage against Northeastern in the all-time series, 9-7. The two teams faced off twice last year in MIAA conference play with the Bearcats coming out on top in both matchups.
