Men's Basketball Continues Conference Roadtrip at Northeastern State

Bolivar, Mo. - Southwest Baptist (4-4, 0-1 MIAA) will continue their conference road trip Saturday afternoon in Tahlequah, Oklahoma for MIAA action against the Northeastern State Riverhawks (3-6, 0-3 MIAA).

Previewing the Bearcats
The Bearcats have opened the 2017-18 season with a 4-4 record. Their last time out the Bearcats fell in their MIAA conference opener to Central Oklahoma, 83-64. The Bearcats are paced by senior forward Logan Hovey who averages a team high 20.7 ppg and 8.4 rpg. Juniors Cartier Dean and Marlon Alcindor average double figure scoring with 10.3 ppg and 13.9 ppg, respectively. Alcindor had a team high 16 points in the Central Oklahoma game. Dean is also the second leading rebounder on the team with 4.4 rpg.  As a team, the Bearcats are scoring 82.4 ppg and shooting a conference leading 47.1% from behind the arc while only giving up 75.8 ppg on 43.5% shooting from opponents.

Previewing the Riverhawks
Northeastern State comes into this contest with a record of 3-6 (0-3 MIAA). On Tuesday night, they were defeated by fellow MIAA opponent Central Oklahoma 82-71. Northeastern State features four seniors in their starting lineup. Leading the way for the Riverhawks is graduate transfer Jamir Andrews with 15.6 ppg. Lucas Antunez is the second leading scorer with 9.8 ppg. The Riverhawks leading rebounder is senior big man Gordon Hill. For the year, the Riverhawks have a negative average scoring differential as they only score 68.0 ppg and allow 72.0 ppg..

The Coaches
SBU head coach Clark Sheehy is in his fourth season on the SBU bench, holding a 40-54 (19-42 MIAA) record while at SBU. Coach Sheehy holds a career coaching record of 222-155 across twelve seasons while coaching six different All-Americans and over 20 athletes that have moved on to play professional basketball. Sheehy has guided the Bearcats back to .500 after starting out 1-3 this season.

Mark Downey is in his first year guiding the Riverhawks men's basketball program. Downey carries a 204-103 overall head coaching record with four NCAA Division II Tournament appearances. Downey was previoisly the top assistant for NCAA Division I Fort Wayne before coming to Northeastern State.

All-Time Series
Northeastern State leads the all-time series against SBU, 12-5. The two teams faced off twice last year with SBU coming away with victories in both games.
