Bolivar, Mo. - Southwest Baptist will open up their 2017-18 when they host the SBU Classic. The Bearcats will take on Henderson State on Friday, followed by a Saturday match-up with Ouachita Baptist.
The Coaches
SBU head coach
Kelsey Keizer is in her fourth season on the Bearcat bench after leading SBU back to the MIAA Tournament in Kansas City for the first time in three years. Coach Keizer and the Bearcats are coming off back-to-back winning seasons (16-14, 7-12 MIAA last year), which has not been done since the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons. Coach Keizer holds a career coaching record of 43-45, including a 22-38 mark in the MIAA.
Jill Thomas begins her fifth season as the head coach at Henderson State. Thomas holds a career coaching record of 110-114 across eight seasons, while having a 45-66 record at HSU.
Garry Crowder begins his 23rd season as the head coach at Ouachita Baptist. Crowder holds a career coaching record of 735-386, spanning across 40 seasons.
Scouting the Bearcats
The Bearcats finished the 2016-17 season 16-14 (7-12 MIAA) and with a quarterfinal finish in the MIAA Conference Tournament. SBU returns its top two scorers in Megan Rosenbohm and Caylee Richardson. Rosenbohm, an all MIAA second team performer, averaged a team high 16.8 ppg, shot a team high 88.3% from the line to go along with 1.8 spg. Richardson averaged 11.5 ppg and team high 6.9 rpg. SBU also returns starter Morgan Henderson.
Scouting the Reddies
Henderson State finished the 2016-17 season 8-20 (8-14 GAC). The Reddies return eleven players off of last years squad. Pink Jones is the top HSU returner as she averaged 13.8 ppg and 3.5 apg last season.
Scouting the Tigers
Ouachita Baptist finished the 2016-17 season 12-17 (9-13 GAC) while advancing to the GAC postseason tournament. The Tigers return their top two scorers from a season ago in Madison Brittain and Chasidee Owens. Both of which were freshman last year. Brittain averaged 11.0 ppg and shot 34.0 % from three while Owens averaged 10.4 ppg and 4.6 rpg last season.
