Box Score Bolivar, Mo. - Southwest Baptist used a 50-26 second half to knock off Hannibal-LaGrange Saturday afternoon. The win is the Bearcats second straight to improve their overall record to 3-3 this season.
Hannibal-LaGrange jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead on the Bearcats in the first three minutes. Over the next six minutes, the Bearcats went on a 16-4 spurt to open up a 7 point lead. By the 6:56 mark though, Hannibal-LaGrange had retaken the lead 26-25 on a three from Brady Smith, who ended up with a game high 22 points. The Bearcats would immediately retake the lead 28-26 on a three from Cartier Dean. However, that was the last lead SBU would have the rest of the half as Hannibal-LaGrange took a 40-39 lead into the break. Â
In the second half, the Bearcats came out sizzling. They made six of their first nine shots in the half to grab a 57-48 advantage with 13:14 to go. The early 18-8 run was capped by a three from Darnell Latham Jr. The Trojans continued to stick around and trim the Bearcat lead back to six on a three by Demetrius Early with 10 minutes left. However, after that three from Early, the Bearcats exploded for an 11-0 run that was finished off by a Marlon Alcindor three. For the last 7 minutes of the game, the Bearcats kept the Trojans at bay to finish off the 89-66Â victory.
Logan Hovey fell a rebound shy of his third double double of the year with 20 points and 9 rebounds. He was 7 of 11 (63.6%) from the floor and 6 of 8 (75%) at the line. Marlon Alcindor had a career high 20 points, 4 made threes, and shot 77.8% (7-9). Cartier Dean was the other Bearcat in double figures with 13 points and was 3 of 4 from deep. For the afternoon, the Bearcats shot 50% on field goals, 56.5% (13-23) on threes, 80% at the stripe, and out rebounded the Trojans 39 to 29.
The men's basketball team will be back in action at home Thursday night against Ecclesia College. Tip is scheduled for 7:00 PM from the Meyer Sports Center in Bolivar.
