11/18/2017 5:29:00 PM

Box Score Liberty, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist men's basketball team was defeated by William Jewell 96-81 on Saturday afternoon.  With the loss, the Bearcats are now hold a record of 1-3.

The Cardinals and Bearcats played a back and forth first half. The Bearcats jumped out to an early 8-5 lead after a three pointer from Marlon Alcindor and free throw from Cartier Dean.  Both William Jewell and Southwest Baptist traded baskets for the next few minutes.  A Chris Rossow layup at the 14:15 mark made the score 10-9 in favor of SBU.  William Jewell would then go on a short 8-2 run to give them a 17-12 edge.  The Bearcats responded though with their 13-2 run of their own, capped by two good free throws from the freshman point guard Rossow.  Jewell would not go away as a three from Keith Hays with 4:00 to go in the half tied the game at 27.  After a jumper from Cartier Dean gave the Bearcats a 31-29 advantage, William Jewell used a 10-5 scoring advantage the rest of the half to take 39-35 lead into the locker room. Chris Rossow did appear to hit a half court three for the Bearcats at the halftime buzzer, which would have trimmed the deficit to only 1 at the half, but the shot was waved off.

Over the first two and a half minutes of the second half, William Jewell used a 10-2 run to stretch their lead to 12, forcing the Bearcats to call time out.  At the 14:01 mark, the Cardinals had extended their lead to 18 on two good free throws from Pharroh Gordon. The Bearcats continued to fight though as they used their own 15-8 surge, capped by a Logan Hovey jumper, to bring the score to 71-60 with 7:58 to go in the game. This was as close as the Bearcats would come before falling by the final score of 96-81.

Senior forward Logan Hovey and junior guard Cartier Dean both had standout performances today for Southwest Baptist. Hovey continued his monster play this season with 28 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists on 11 of 17 shooting from the floor. Dean posted his first double double of the year with 24 points and 12 boards.  Freshman point guard Chris Rossow added 10 points and 8 rebounds as well.

The Southwest Baptist men's basketball team will return to action on Monday, November 20th when they take on Williams Baptist in another non-conference tilt. Tip is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. from the Meyer Sports Center in Bolivar, Missouri.
