15 SBU Football Players Named All-GLVC

Indianapolis, Ind. - Southwest Baptist University Football had 15 players named All-GLVC as announced by the conference office today.  Headlining the honorees were senior wide receiver Kendrick Payne, junior wide receiver Jerminic Smith, junior linebacker Tyler Curts, and junior defensive back Cory Hanger, who all made 1st Team All-GLVC. 

Payne, who in addition to being named a first team All-GLVC wide receiver was also named second team All-GLVC kick returner/punt returner, led the GLVC in numerous categories including receptions (67), receiving yards (934), receiving touchdowns (10), and average receiving yards per game (93.4).  Payne's great season also put him atop the SBU record books in career receiving yards with 3,364 and in career touchdowns with 35.  Jerminic Smith was the second leading receiver for the Bearcats with 580 receiving yards and 5 touchdowns.  Those 580 receiving yards ranked 7th in the GLVC and the 5 receiving touchdowns ranked 5th in the conference.

Tyler Curts and Cory Hanger were both anchors for the Bearcat defense.  Tyler Curts led Southwest Baptist in total tackles (101) and his tackles per game of (10.1) ranked 2nd overall in the GLVC.  He also added 9 tackles for loss and one interception on the year.  Cory Hanger in his first season as a defensive back totaled 5 interceptions and 19 passes defensed.  Both of those ranked first on the team and in the GLVC.   

Earning 2nd team All-GLVC honors were quarterback TJ Edwards, offensive lineman Ryan Becker, and defensive lineman De'shawn Tone.  Edwards, a now three-time All-GLVC performer, threw for 2,730 yards, 23 touchdowns, completed 62.3% of his passes, and added 4 touchdowns on the ground this season.  Becker was an integral part of the Bearcat offense that averaged 410.5 yards per game.  De'shawn Tone's tackles for loss (18.5), sacks (6.5), and fumbles recovered (2) all were a team high.     

Garnering All-GLVC honorable mention were wide receiver Chris Robb, offensive utility Connor Still, offensive lineman Sammy Zeqiraj, offensive lineman Brayden Byrd, defensive lineman Julian Shade, defensive lineman Victor Clavier, linebacker Brycen Gagnon, and defensive back Quinlan Gaines.    

Wide receiver Chris Robb was also announced as an honoree for the GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award.   The student-athletes chosen for this award are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These individuals must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. The honorees are now eligible to become one of their school's two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners, which will be announced at the end of the academic year.
