Bolivar, Mo. - Logan Hovey gave SBU his second straight double-double as the Southwest Baptist University men's basketball team collected their first win of the 2017-18 season with a 74-63 victory over Southwestern Oklahoma State on Saturday evening. With the win the Bearcats now stand at 1-1 on the season.
The game proved to be a defensive battle from the start, and a pair of back-to-back three's from Marlin Alcindor gave SBU an early 6-2 lead two minutes into the contest. The two teams exchanged leads four times over the next eight minutes, and after trailing 11-10, the Bearcat used an 11-2 run to extend their lead to 8 (21-13) with 7:57 left in the half. SBU continued to slowly extend their lead, and a layup from Damian Progmet followed by a layup from Maris Colton gave the Bearcats their first double-digit lead of the game at 25-15 with 5:53 remaining in the half. SWOSUÂ responded with a 9-1 run to cut the SBU lead down to 2 (26-23), but the Bearcats held strong and eventually went into the break leading 33-28.
Coming out in the second half SBU and SWOSU continued to exchange baskets, as the Bearcat lead was never higher than 9 or lower than 4 until a three-pointer from Kai Woodfall once again pushed the Bearcat lead to double-digits at 59-49 with 6:30 remaining. SBU then received a dunk from Logan Hovey, pushing their lead to 12, but Southwestern Oklahoma State continued to hang around by using an 8-0 run to cut the Bearcat lead back to four at 61-57 with 4:01 to go. Hovey rattled off five straight points to jumpstart a 9-0 run to quickly push the SBU lead to a game high 13 (70-57) with 1:04 remaining. The Bearcats held tight as they eventually went on to claim the 74-63 win.
Logan Hovey gave SBU his second straight double-double with a team high 16 points and 12 rebounds in the victory. Marlin Alcindor also had 16 points to go along with 7 rebounds, while Kai Woodfall chipped in 13 points off of the bench. The Bearcats shot 39.7% from the field, 38.1% from beyond the arc, and 64.5% from the line.
The Bearcats will return to action on Tuesday, November 14 when they host Drury in the annual Bank of Bolivar Catfight. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. from the Meyer Sports Center in Bolivar.
