Hays, Kan. - The Southwest Baptist University women's basketball team fell on the road at Fort Hays State on Saturday 88-63. With the loss SBU drops to 10-4 (2-3 MIAA) on the season.
The Bearcats were the first to strike in the opening minute on a
Caylee Richardson to take an early 2-0 lead. After FHSU tied the game, a layup from Richardson coupled with a three from Richardson gave the Bearcats a 7-2 lead with 7:32 left in the quarter. SBU continued to hold a small lead over the next four minutes, and a jumper from
Megan Rosenbohm with 3:46 left in the quarter gave SBU a 16-13 lead. However, Fort Hays used an 8-0 run to take their first lead of the game, but the Bearcats fought back with four straight points from
Aliyah Isaac to trailed 21-20 with 44 seconds left in the first quarter. FHSU would add a three point play at the end of the quarter with SBU trailing 24-20.
A three pointer from Isaac opened up the second quarter to pull the Bearcats back within one at 24-23. Fort Hays pushed their lead to double figures (36-25) with 3:09 left in the half, but Southwest Baptist responded with an 8-0 run to pull back within three.
Morgan Henderson started the run with a layup, followed by back-to-back buckets from Rosenbohm, and capped off with a
Gokce Cetin jumper to put SBU down 36-33 with 44 seconds remaining in the half. Both team would add two more points before the end of the half, as the Bearcats went into the break trailing 38-35.
SBU cut the deficit back to one off of a pair of free throws from
Mackenzie Skupa to open up the second half. However, over the next three minutes FHSU used a 9-0 run to push their lead back to double figures at 47-37 with 6:25 remaining in the quarter. A layup from Isaac and two free throws from Richardson cut the deficit back to six (47-41) before Fort Hays used a 21-2 run to close out the quarter with the Bearcats trailing 68-43. SBU was unable to make up any ground in the final quarter of play as the Bearcats fell 88-63.
Aliyah Isaac led the way offensively for the Bearcats, collecting a team high 14 points while
Alex Botkin had 12 points and
Caylee Richardson chipped in 11 points and 8 rebounds in the loss. As a team SBU shot 39.7% from the field, 25.0% from beyond the arc, and 90.9% from the line.
The Bearcats will return to action on Thursday, January 12 when they host Missouri Western. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. from the Meyer Sports Center in Bolivar.
