Bolivar Mo. – The Southwest Baptist University Women's Basketball team came up just short of #7 Emporia State falling 84-77, dropping to 11-9 (3-8) MIAA on the season.
Emporia would open the game with the basket, but then SBU would respond with baskets from
Caylee Richardson and
Mackenzie Skupa that would tie the game at 4. Emporia would go on a 6-0 to give the Lady Hornets a 10-4 lead, however SBU would respond with a 4-0 run to close the Emporia State lead to 10-8. Emporia would end the quarter on a 13-10 run and take a 23-18 lead into the 2nd quarter.
Emporia would start the 2nd quarter on a 6-0 run increasing their lead to 11 at 29-18. The Bearcats would respond with a
Megan Rosenbohm layup and a
Kiana Peterson three pointer to cut the deficit to 6. Over the next four minutes Emporia would use an 11-7 run to give them their largest lead of the game at 40-27. The half would end with a Rosenbohm half court buzzer beater as SBU would trail 43-34.
Emporia would get the first bucket of the quarter but then SBU would respond with a layup from Skupa and two free throws and a layup from
Morgan Henderson as SBU cut the lead to 49-40. ESU would hit a three to make the score 52-40, but SBU would go on an 18-9 run. During the run Rosenbohm scored 11 points, as SBU cut the Emporia lead to 58-56 with 1:14 left in the quarter. Emporia would end up taking a 60-56 lead into the 4th quarter.
The Bearcats would open the 4th quarter on a 8-5 run with layups from
Natalie O'Keefe,
Aliyah Isaac, and Rosenbohm plus two free throws from Rosenbohm. SBU would then cut the Emporia lead to 65-64 with 7:10 left in the contest, but Emporia would respond with a 14-4 run giving them a 79-68 lead with 2:47 left in the game. SBU would use a 5-1 run of their own with a layup from Richardson and three free throws from Rosenbohm to decrease Emporia's lead to 80-73 with just under a minute remaining. In the end SBU would fall 84-77.
The Bearcats were led in scoring by
Megan Rosenbohm with 31,
Kameron Schaaf with 11, and
Caylee Richardson with 10. Richardson also led SBU with 13 rebounds, tying her career high and giving her a double-double.
Natalie O'Keefe had a career high 6 blocks in the contest. SBU shot 45.0% from the field, 22.2% from beyond the arc, and 95.5% from the free throw line.
The Bearcats will return to action Thursday February 2nd when they travel to Northeastern State. Tipoff is set for 5:30 pm from the NSU Event Center in Tahlequah, Okla.
