Bolivar, Mo. – The Southwest Baptist University Women's Basketball team fell to Washburn 62-59 on Thursday night. With the loss SBU drops to 11-8 (3-7 MIAA) on the season.
Washburn opened up the scoring with a layup, but the Bearcats would answer with an 8-2 run. The run began with a
Megan Rosenbohm layup, followed by a
Caylee Richardson jumper, an
Aliyah Isaac layup, and capped off by a
Morgan Henderson layup. Washburn would end the quarter on a 6-2 run to tie the game at 10.
Megan Rosenbohm would open the 2nd quarter scoring by hitting a 3-pointer. Washburn would go on a 5-0 run before Rosenbohm would hit 2 free throws to tie the game at 15. The two teams would trade baskets back and forth leading to a 28-26 Washburn going into the half.
SBU would open the 2nd half with baskets by
Mackenzie Skupa and
Morgan Henderson, and Skupa would hit a layup to give SBU a 34-32 lead. Washburn would score to tie the game at 34. The Bearcats would end the quarter on a 14-6 run, with 32 seconds left in the quarter
Natalie O'Keefe would hit a jumper that would give SBU their largest lead of the game at 48-38. The quarter would come to an end with SBU leading 48-40.
Washburn would hit a three to start the 4th quarter, but SBU would quickly answer with a
Mackenzie Skupa jumper. Two free throws from
Caylee Richardson would give SBU a 52-45 lead with 7:27 remaining in the game, but Washburn responded to cut the SBU lead to 52-49 with 6:40 remaining. Washburn would then use a 5-0 run to take a 54-53 lead, however
Morgan Henderson would connect on an and one to give SBU the lead at 56-54. Over the final 3:39 Washburn would use a 6-3 run to win the game 62-59.
SBU was led in scoring by
Megan Rosenbohm with 14,
Mackenzie Skupa with 13,
Morgan Henderson with 12, and
Aliyah Isaac with 10. Skupa led the Bearcats with 8 rebounds while
Caylee Richardson had 7. As a team SBU shot 38% from the field, 21% from beyond the arc, and 80% from the free throw line.
The Bearcats return to action on Saturday January 28 as the host Emporia State. Tipoff is set for 1:30pm from the Meyer Sports Center in Bolivar.
