Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University men's basketball team fell to Washburn on Thursday evening 76-63. With the loss the Bearcats fall to 10-9 (3-7 MIAA) on the season.
The Bearcats opened the game up against the Ichabods with a 7-0 run.
Logan Hovey hit a pair of free throws, and then five straight points from
Brian Patterson gave the Bearcats their largest lead of the evening. SBU continued to hold a small lead, and after
Theo Oghide connected on a layup the Bearcats held an 11-8 lead with 14:54 left in the first half. WU responded with an 8-0 run, taking a 16-11 lead, before Hovey connected on a bucket to bring SBU within three at 16-13 with 11:28 left in the half. Both team exchanged three pointers, and Washburn would lead 25-20 with 5:04 left in the half. However, the Ichabods would use a 7-0 run to close out the half as SBU went into the break trailing 32-20.
In the second half Washburn slowly built their lead to a game high 26 (68-42) with 9:56 remaining in the game. The Bearcats would continue to fight, and started to chip away at the lead. Trailing 70-45 with 5:59 remaining, SBU went on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit under 20. After a bucket from Washburn, SBU used another 9-2 run to bring the game within 13 at 74-61. SBU closed out the contest on an 18-6 run, but it wasn't enough as SBU would eventually fall 76-63.
SBU was led in scoring by
Cartier Dean with 12 points, while
Kalehl Brown,
Brian Patterson, and
Kai Woodfall all chipped in 9 points a piece.
Logan Hovey pulled down a team high 8 rebounds, while Dean also dished out a team high 3 assists. As a team SBU shot 42.9% from the field, 52.6% from beyond the arc, and 50.0% from the line.
The Bearcats will return to action on Saturday, January 28 when they host Emporia State. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. from the Meyer Sports Center in Bolivar.
