Box Score 2 Memphis, Tenn. - The Southwest Baptist University volleyball team picked up their first victory of the 2016 season in a split on final day of the Christian Brothers Tournament. The Bearcats took down Barton College 3-2 before falling to Saint Joseph's 3-2. At the conclusion of the weekend SBU now stands at 1-3 on the season.
In SBU's victory over Barton, the Bearcats fell 25-14 in the first set, came back to take set two 25-19, but fell in set three 25-17. Southwest Baptist came back to take the final two sets 25-18 and 18-16 to claim the 3-2 victory. SBU once again had a pair of athletes pick up double-double's in the contest with
Serena Mar picking up a team high 17 assists to go along with a team high 21 digs.
Dana Neal had a team high 13 kills to go along with 16 digs, while
Bailey Baumann had 17 digs and
Whitney Johnson had 12 digs in the victory.
In the Bearcats' 3-2 loss to Saint Joseph's SBU took the early lead by taking set one 25-18. The Pumas responded to take sets two and three at 26-24, before the Bearcats claimed set four 25-12. Saint Joseph's would win the fifth and final set 15-12 as SBU fell 3-2.
Bailey Baumann had a career match, collecting a career high 33 digs in the loss, as the Bearcats once again had two athletes earn double-double's.
Serena Mar picked up a team high 20 assists to go along with 10 digs, while
Brea Freeman had 16 assists and 13 digs.
Kalyn Sotomayor led the way offensively with a team high 11 kills, while
Katie Robinson and
Leah Rader each chipped in with 10 kills apiece.
SBU will return to action on Friday, September 9 for the SBU Invitational. The Bearcats are set to host Illinois-Springfield at 2:00 p.m. followed by a 7:00 p.m. start against Union.
