Memphis, Tenn. - The Southwest Baptist University volleyball team fell in both matches of day one at the Christian Brothers Tournament on Friday. The Bearcats fell to Texas A&M-Kingsville 3-1, followed by a 3-0 loss to host Christian Brothers.
In SBU's match against Texas A&M-Kingsville the Bearcats took the first set 25-23 before falling 25-14, 25-13, and 25-17 to drop the match 3-1. Individually the Bearcats had several strong performances in the opening match of the season, with
Serena Mar and
Dana Neal both producing double-double's. Mar collected a team high 15 assists to go along with 13 digs, while Neal had a team high 12 kills and 10 digs.
Bailey Baumann led the Bearcats defensively with 14 digs while
Whitney Johnson also had 11 digs in the loss.
Despite playing the host school close, in the second match of the day the Bearcats fell to Christian Brothers 25-16, 27-25, and 25-21. Baumann recorded a game high 17 digs, while Mar had a team high 12 assists, and
Kalyn Sotomayor registered a team high 7 kills in the loss.
The Bearcats will return to action on Saturday, September 3 for the final day of the Christian Brothers Tournament. SBU is set to take on Barton College at 12:30 p.m. followed by Saint Joseph's at 5:00 p.m.
