Box Score Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University baseball team completed a season sweep on Lincoln on Tuesday afternoon with a 14-8 victory over the Blue Tigers. After the win, SBU now stands at 16-15 (12-11 MIAA) on the season.
The Blue Tigers struck first in the top of the first, scoring an unearned run as SBU trailed 1-0 heading into the bottom half of the inning. SBU quickly took their first lead of the game in the bottom half of the first. With one out,
Christian Binger singled up the middle, followed two batters later with a
Carter Sherban single to right field. Both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch, and a two-rbi single from
Hunter Hisky put SBU ahead 2-1.
Trevor Bowling then drew a two out walk, followed by an rbi single to center field by
Jeff Bouchard as SBU held a 3-1 lead.
After a scoreless second inning by LU, the Bearcats took advantage and extended their lead. With one out in the inning
Caleb Sneed singled to centerfield, followed by a Binger walk, and a
Chance Wolfe triple to left center cleared the bases as SBU went ahead 5-1. Sherban then hit a sacrifice fly to give SBU a 6-1 lead after two innings of play. After a scoreless third, the Blue Tigers added two runs in the fourth as SBU lead 6-3 heading into the fifth.
In the bottom of the fifth SBU plated three more runs to go ahead 9-3. Bouchard led the inning off with a single through the left side, and the Bearcats had runners on the corners after an LU error. The Bearcats successful ran a double-steal, as Bouchard stole home to give SBU a 7-3 lead. Sneed then singled up the middle to score
Cody Massey followed by back-to-back walks from Binger and Wolfe to load the bases. Hisky then drew a bases loaded walk as SBU took a 9-3 lead.
Neither team scored in the sixth, and the Blue Tigers plated five runs in the top half of the seventh to cut the SBU lead to one at 9-8. However, the Bearcats came right back with four runs to open the game back up. Sherban led the inning off with a single down the right field line, followed by a dropped ball in the outfield to put runners on first and second with no outs. Bowling then connected with his ninth homerun of the year, a three-run shot, to give SBU a 12-8 lead. After a diving catch in the outfield by LU, Massey hit a triple to right center and came home a batter later on an rbi bunt single by
Blake Hobbs as SBU lead 13-8 heading into the eighth.
Lincoln would be held scoreless for the remainder of the game, and the Bearcats added another run in the eighth off of an LU error, as SBU would go on to claim the 14-8 victory. Each SBU batter recorded a hit for the Bearcats, as Binger also tied the single game record in walks with four.
The Bearcats will be back in action on Thursday, April 7 when they host Washburn to open up a three-game series. Opening pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. from Dodson Field in Bolivar.
