Bolivar, Mo. – The Southwest Baptist University baseball team used a six run eighth to propel them to a 9-7 victory over Pittsburg State on Saturday afternoon. With the win, SBU improves to 19-23 (14-18 MIAA) on the season.
The Bearcats jumped ahead early in the bottom half of the first inning. With one out,
Christian Binger hit a solo homerun off of the scoreboard in left to give SBU a 1-0 lead.
Sean Murley then singled up the middle, followed two batters later by a
Jeff Bouchard single to right field to put runners on the corners with two outs.
Cody Massey then singled through the right side, scoring Murley, giving the Bearcats a 2-0 lead. After a
Trevor Bowling walk loaded the bases,
Seth Ell drew another walk to force home a run as SBU lead 3-0 after an inning of play.
Pittsburg State responded over the next six innings, scoring 7 runs, as SBU trailed 7-3 heading into the eighth. After
Carter Sherban shut the Gorillas down in order, the Bearcats came to the plate trailing by four runs.
Bowling led the inning off with a double to center field, followed by a Ell single to center to put runners on the corners with no outs.
Hunter Hisky hit a ground-rule double to left center, scoring Bowling, before
Caleb Sneed hit a two-rbi single to right field to pull SBU within one at 7-6. Binger was then hit by a pitch, and following two outs, Bouchard drew a walk to load the bases. The Bearcats used an error on the following batter to score two runs, taking an 8-7 lead, before an infield single by Bowling led to another run as SBU led 9-7 heading into the ninth. Sherban continued his strong relief appearance by shutting PSU down in order as the Bearcats came away with the 9-7 victory.
The Bearcats will be back in action on Tuesday, April 26 when they host Central Missouri in a mid-week MIAA contest. Opening pitch has yet to be determined for the game which will be played at Dodson Field in Bolivar.
