Box Score Maryville, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University baseball team fell in extra innings at Northwest Missouri 3-2 to open up a three-game series against the Bearcats. After the loss, SBU drops to 17-19 (12-14 MIAA) on the season.
After a pair of scoreless innings to open up the game, Northwest Missouri took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. The Bearcats bounced back in the top of the fourth to tie the game.
Christian Binger led the inning off with a walk, and advanced to second with two outs in the inning.
Jeff Bouchard then singled to center field to tie the game at 1-1. NWMSU answered right back in the bottom half of the innings with a run as SBU trailed 2-1. After a scoreless fifth inning, the Bearcats once again tied the game.
In the top of the sixth
Chance Wolfe hit a two-out single up the middle. After a
Carter Sherban walk, Bouchard hit another rbi single to tie the game at 2-2, forcing a Northwest Missouri pitching change. However, SBU was unable to plate another run in the inning as the game was tied heading into the seventh.
Solid pitching from both teams over the next three innings would force extra innings at a 2-2 tie. In the top of the tenth the Bearcats threatened to score when
Cody Massey led the inning off with a double, but SBU stranded runners on first and second heading to the bottom half of the inning. In the bottom half of the inning Northwest Missouri would score the game winning run on a wild pitch as SBU fell 3-2.
Luke Lucas gave SBU a solid start on the mound, throwing 5.1 innings allowing a pair of runs, while
Brian Womack threw 2.2 innings without allowing a hit.
SBU will return to action on Saturday, April 16 for game two of the three-game series at Northwest Missouri. Opening pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. from Maryville, Missouri.
