Box Score 2 Kirksville, Mo. – The Southwest Baptist University baseball team earned a non-conference double-header split at Truman State on Tuesday afternoon, taking game two 8-1 after falling 6-4 in game one. At the conclusion of the day, SBU now stands at 6-9 on the season.
In game two of the afternoon both the Bearcats and Bulldogs were scoreless through the first three innings of play. SBU broke the scoreless game in the top of the fourth when
Caleb Sneed and
Christian Binger led the inning of with back-to-back singles. The baserunners were moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt from
Sean Murley, and an rbi single from
Carter Sherban gave SBU a 1-0 lead. After a
Chance Wolfe walk,
Cody Massey hit a sacrifice fly to put the Bearcats on top 2-0. TSU responded in the bottom half of the inning with a run, making it 2-1 SBU, before the Bearcats answered back in the top of the sixth.
With one out in the inning, Sherban doubled down the left field line, followed by a Wolfe single to put runners on the corners. Massey then hit an rbi single to right field, and after Bulldog balk,
Trevor Bowling hit an rbi single through the left side to put the Bearcats ahead 4-1. SBU kept the line moving with an rbi sacrifice bunt from
Blake Hobbs to give SBU the 5-1 lead after five and a half innings of play.

Jay Kaufman continued to roll, taking the game into the top of the eighth with a 5-1 lead. The Bearcats added to their lead in the eighth, with back-to-back singles from Bowling and Hobbs before a
Hunter Hisky walk loaded the bases. Two outs later, Hobbs came home on a wild pitch to put the Bearcats ahead 6-1. After a Binger walk, Murley and Sherban hit back-to-back rbi singles to give SBU an 8-1 lead. The bullpen relieved Kaufman, who threw 7.0 innings while allowing only 1 run, and preserved the 8-1 victory.
In game one the Bearcats jumped ahead in the top of the first inning with two quick runs. Sneed and Binger led off the game with back-to-back singles, followed by a sacrifice bunt from Murley. Sherban then had an rbi groundout, followed by a Bulldog error, which scored Binger, to put SBU ahead 2-0. Truman responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, but the Bearcats re-took the lead in the second. SBU loaded the bases with a single from Hobbs, a hit batsman in
Tim Gurnow, and a Sneed walk before Binger hit an rbi infield single to third to put SBU ahead 2-1. However, TSU bounced back with three runs in the third before SBU put another run on the board in the fourth. SBU once again led the inning off with back-to-back singles from Bowling and Hobbs before Sneed hit an rbi single through the right side making it 5-4 TSU. However, Truman State added another run in the bottom of the fourth as SBU eventually fell 6-4.
The Bearcats will return to MIAA action on Friday, March 11 when they travel to Fort Hays State. Opening pitch is set for 4:00 p.m. from Hays, Kansas.
