Box Score 2 Hays, Kan. – The Southwest Baptist University softball team split a double-header at Fort Hays State on Saturday afternoon, taking game one 4-3 before falling in game two 6-3. At the conclusion of the day, SBU now stands at 8-12 (3-1 MIAA) on the season.
After four scoreless innings to open up game one, the Bearcats broke through in the top of the fifth. Yezzani Gonzlaez led the inning off with a single to centerfield, and two batters later
Catlin Evans got on with a bunt single.
Rachel Ray then got on off of a FHSU error, followed by
Dana Graves getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to put SBU up 1-0.
Kaley Hansen then hit a bases clearing double to put the Bearcats ahead 4-0. Fort Hays responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, but the Bearcats would come away with the 4-3 victory.
In game two the Tigers were the first to strike in the bottom of the second inning, scoring three runs, while adding another in the bottom of the third. However, SBU was able to get on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth. After two quick outs, the Bearcats had three straight singles from Hansen,
Lyndie Routh, and
Stef Lischke to load the bases.
Kelcee Welch the hit an rbi single up the middle to cut the deficit to 4-1. FHSU added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, taking a 6-1 lead, before SBU attempted a seventh inning comeback.
Evans led the inning off with an infield single, followed by back-to-back singles up the middle from Ray and Graves to load the bases.
Caitlyn Cooner then hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Evans, before an rbi single from Hansen cut the deficit to 6-3. However, the Bearcats were unable to push another run across the plate as they fell 6-3 in game two.
SBU will return to action on Tuesday, March 8 when they host Missouri Southern. Opening pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. from the SBU Softball Field in Bolivar.
