Bolivar, Mo. – The Southwest Baptist University baseball team lost a heartbreaker to Missouri Western on Saturday afternoon 7-5. With the loss, SBU drops to 5-8 (1-5 MIAA) on the season.

The Bearcats were the first to strike in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs, Sean Murley tripled to right field and came home on a wild pitch to give SBU a 1-0 lead. Missouri Western answered back in the top of the second with a run of their own, but the Bearcats came back to re-take the lead in the bottom half of the inning.

Carter Sherban led the inning off with a single to center field, followed two batters later by a Cody Massey single through the right side and a Hunter Hisky single to right field to load the bases. Caleb Sneed then hit an rbi sacrifice fly to left field to put SBU ahead 2-1.

The game would remain scoreless for the next three innings before the Bearcats extended their lead in the bottom of the sixth. Trevor Bowling led the inning off by getting hit by a pitch, stole second, and a bunt single from Massey put runners on the corners. After a pair of outs Binger walked to load the bases for Murley. Murley hit a hard ground ball to short, which went through the shortstop's legs, as both Bowling and Massey came home to put SBU ahead 4-1. Binger then came home on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 5-1. However, Western would put up six runs in the top of the ninth as SBU would eventually fall 7-5.

SBU will be back in action on Tuesday, March 8 when they travel to Truman State in a non-conference double-header. Opening pitch of game one is set for 12:00 p.m. from Kirksville, Missouri.
