Caleb Sneed continued his record breaking season on Tuesday afternoon by hitting for an SBU single game record six hits in the Bearcats 19-5 victory at Lincoln. With the win, SBU improves to 14-13 (9-8 MIAA) on the season.
The Bearcats jumped ahead in the top of the first inning when Sneed led the game off with a single, followed by a
Christian Binger single, and two batters later
Carter Sherban was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Chance Wolfe then hit a sacrifice fly to left field to put SBU up 1-0. In the bottom of the second, the Blue Tigers came back to tie the game at 1-1 before SBU broke the game open in the top of the third.
Binger led the inning off with a single through the left side, followed to batters later by a Sherban two-run homerun to put SBU ahead 3-1. Wolfe then doubled to left center, and after another hits batsman and an infield single by
Hunter Hisky the Bearcats once again had the bases loaded.
Cody Massey knocked home another run on an infield single, followed by a two-rbi double to right field by Sneed to extend the SBU lead to 6-1. The Blue Tigers responded in the bottom of the third with three runs, and added another in the bottom of the fourth as SBU lead 6-5 through four innings of play.
In the top of the fifth
Trevor Bowling led the inning off with a solo homerun to centerfield, followed to batters later by a Sneed homerun to left field to give SBU an 8-5 lead. In the top of the sixth, Sherban hit his second homerun of the day, a solo shot to left field. Wolfe then hit an infield single, followed two batters later by a Hisky single to put runners on the corners with one out. Bowling doubled down the left field line, scoring Wolfe, and two batters later Sneed doubled home two more to take a 12-5 lead.
The Bearcats continued to add on runs, and after an rbi single by Wolfe extended the lead to 13-5, SBU exploded for six runs in the top of the eighth. Bowling led off the top of the eighth with his second solo homerun of the day, followed by a Massey double and Sneed single to put runners on the corners. Binger then singled through the left side to score Massey, and after
Sean Murley was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Sherban hit an rbi groundout to put SBU up 16-5. After Wolfe drew a walk to load the bases, Hisky hit a bases clearing double to center field to extend the SBU lead to 19-5. Lincoln went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the eighth as SBU came away with a 19-5 run-rule victory.
SBU will return to action on Friday, April 1 when they travel to Missouri Southern to open up a three-game series against the Lions. Opening pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. from Joplin, Missouri.
