Box Score Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University baseball team used a strong outing from starting pitcher
Cory Borsh to come away with a 5-0 shutout victory over Northeastern State in the opening game of a three-game series on Thursday afternoon. With the win, SBU now stands at 10-10 (5-5 MIAA) on the season.
The Bearcats jumped ahead early against the visiting RiverHawks, plating two runs in the bottom half of the first. With two outs in the inning,
Sean Murley drew a walk followed by an infield single by
Carter Sherban. Back-to-back rbi singles from
Chance Wolfe and
Jeff Bouchard gave the Bearcats a 2-0 lead.
After a scoreless second, Southwest Baptist extended their lead in the bottom half of the third. Back-to-back walks to lead off the inning by
Christian Binger and Murley set up a multi-run inning for the Bearcats. After a sacrifice bunt from Sherban, Wolfe hit an rbi groundout to short to give SBU a 3-0 lead. Bouchard then hit an infield single to score Murley and give the Bearcats a 4-0 lead.
Southwest Baptist added one more run in the bottom of the fifth when
Hunter Hisky hit a solo homerun to right field, putting SBU up 5-0. The five runs were more than enough for SBU starting pitcher
Cory Borsh. Borsh threw 8.0 innings, allowing only 3 hits to go along with 7 strikeouts in the victory.
The Bearcats will return to action on Friday, March 18 when they host Northeastern State in the second game of the series. Opening pitch is set for 12:00 p.m. from Dodson Field in Bolivar.
