Box Score Hays, Kan. - Head SBU Baseball Coach
Chris Martin has picked up his 100th career victory in SBU's 13-8 win over Fort Hays State. With the victory, the Bearcats improve to 9-9 (5-6 MIAA) on the season.
In the final games of the series the Bearcats were once again the first to strike. After a scoreless first inning, the Bearcats used smart base running to take a 1-0 lead.
Carter Sherban led the inning off, and after a fielder's choice put
Chance Wolfe on first, Wolfe advanced to second and third on wild pitches, and used a pitch in the dirt to score on a strikeout, when FHSU threw down to first, to give SBU a 1-0 lead. The Bearcats used a big third inning to once again open the game up.
Blake Hobbs led the inning off with a double to right center followed by a bunt single from
Hunter Hisky to put runners on the corners with no outs.
Caleb Sneed then reached on a fielding error, which scored Hobbs, followed by an rbi infield single from
Sean Murley to give SBU a 3-0 lead. Two batters later Sherban reached on a fielding error, scoring both Murley and Binger, before
Jeff Bouchard hit an rbi single to center field as SBU led 6-0 heading into the bottom of the third. FHSU got one run back in the bottom of the third, and three more in the bottom of the fifth, as SBU led 6-4 heading to the sixth.
In the top of the sixth
Trevor Bowling led the inning off with a single through the left side, and after a fly out, Hisky singled through the right side to put runners on the corners. Sneed then belted a three-run homerun to right field to extend the SBU lead to 9-4. The Tigers came back with a run in the bottom half of the inning, but SBU once again extended their lead in the top of the seventh. Bouchard led the inning off with a double to centerfield, and after a Bowling walk and Hobbs sacrifice, Hisky hit an rbi groundout to put SBU on top 10-5. Sneed continued his strong game with an rbi single up the middle, giving SBU an 11-5 lead. FHSU got a pair of runs back in the eighth, but the Bearcats continued their strong offensive weekend with two more runs in the ninth. Bowling led the inning off with a double down the left field line, followed by an rbi double to center field by Hisky. After a fly out and a Binger walk, Murley hit an rbi single through the left side to give the Bearcats a 13-7 lead, as SBU would go on to claim the 13-8 victory. On the mound
Brian Womack earned the victory by tossing 2.2 innings in relief.
SBU will return to action on Tuesday, March 15 when they host Drury in a non-conference game. Opening pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. from Dodson Field in Bolivar.
