Box Score Hays, Kan. – The Southwest Baptist University women's basketball team fell on the road to #7 Fort Hays State on Saturday afternoon 96-84. With the loss, SBU drops to 12-10 (7-9 MIAA) on the season.
The Bearcats and Lady Tigers were tied in the early minutes of the first quarter, and after a
Dilonna Johnson jumper the score was tied 4-4 with 6:09 left in the first quarter. ESU took a 7-4 lead before
Caylee Richardson connected on a pair of free throws to pull SBU back within one at 7-6. FHSU promptly responded with a 13-0 run, but a
Sarah Magana three and a
Leann Terrill jumper put SBU down 23-11 after the first quarter.
FHSU continued to extend their lead heading into the second quarter of action, leading 26-11 with 9:23 left in the half. SBU cut the deficit back to 11 (28-17) on a pair of
Morgan Henderson free throws, but Fort Hays extended their lead to 23 on a 12-0 run before SBU went into the break trailing 53-27.
Fort Hays State pushed their lead to a game high 28 (64-36) with 6:36 remaining in the third quarter. The Bearcats started to chip away at the Tigers lead, connecting on three straight three's along with three points from Richardson en route to a 12-0 run to pull them back within 16 (64-48) with 3:47 left in the quarter. SBU was able to cut the deficit to single digits on an
Ashlee Pitts three, but a three by FHSU at the end of the quarter put SBU down 71-59 heading into the final quarter of action.
In the fourth quarter Fort Hays extended their lead back to 19 (88-69) with 2:58 to go before the Bearcats used another run to continue to put pressure on the Tigers. SBU used a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to 10 (88-78) off of layups and free throws, but Fort Hays held off the Bearcats for the remainder of the game as SBU would eventually fall 96-84.
Leann Terrill and
Megan Rosenbohm led SBU with 19 points a piece off of the bench, while
Caylee Richardson added 18 points and 6 rebounds and
Dilonna Johnson had 11 points and 8 assists in the loss. As a team SBU shot 46.6% from the field, 43.5% from beyond the arc, and 74.1% from the free throw line.
The Bearcats will be back in action on Wednesday, February 10 when they travel to #16 Emporia State. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. from Emporia, Kansas.
