SBU Men Fall in Tough Road Loss at Fort Hays State, 81-66

Hays, Kan. – The Southwest Baptist University men's basketball team fell on the road at Fort Hays State on Saturday afternoon. After the loss, SBU dropped to 9-13 (4-12 MIAA) on the season.

The Bearcats and Tigers were involved in a tight game throughout most of the evening, and a Brian Patterson three 45 seconds into the game gave SBU their first lead at 3-2. The back-and-forth battle continued, and another three from Patterson with 16:21 left in the half gave SBU the lead back at 11-9. FHSU responded by taking a two point lead before Cartier Dean connected on a three with 14:53 to put the Bearcats back on top at 14-13. The teams continued to exchange leads, and a Patterson layup with 7:11 left in the half knotted the game at 22-22. FHSU pushed their lead to five (27-22) as the two teams continued to exchange baskets as SBU went into half trailing 37-32.

In the second half SBU came out and connected with three free throws to cut the deficit to two (37-35) with 19:43 remaining. Fort Hays continued to hold a small lead, as the Bearcats trailed 49-43 with 13:02 to go. SBU slowly started to chip away at the lead, narrowing the deficit to two numerous times, and a Logan Hovey three with 8:26 remaining gave SBU the lead back at 54-53. However, Fort Hays State quickly regained the lead, but a Kalehl Brown three with 6:09 remaining brought SBU back within one (61-60). Fort Hays State slowly started to build their lead, using a 20-5 run to close out the game, as SBU would fall 81-66.

Logan Hovey led the SBU offensive attack with a team high 21 points and 5 rebounds, while Brian Patterson scored 16 points and Kalehl Brown added 9 points. As a team SBU shot 42.2% from the field, 41.2% from beyond the arc, and 75.0% from the free throw line.

The Bearcats will be back in action on Wednesday, February 10 when they travel to #16 Emporia State. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. from Emporia, Kansas.
