Box Score 2 Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University softball team split a home doubleheader against Newman on Saturday afternoon, taking game one 3-1 before falling in game two 3-2. At the conclusion of the day, SBU now stands at 5-9 on the season.
In game one Newman jumped ahead in the top of the first inning, scoring their lone run of the contest and grabbing a 1-0 lead. Pitching buckled down over the next five innings, as the Bearcats trailed 1-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth. With one out in the inning,
Dana Graves singled through the right side, and a
Caitlyn Cooner walk put runners on first and second. After an SBU out,
Catlin Evans hit an rbi single to center field, tying the game at 1-1. The Bearcats then plated two more runs on a Newman error to take a 3-1 lead. The three runs were more than enough for
Kacey Ayers who threw a complete game victory, allowing only four hits in the game.
In game two Newman once again jumped ahead 1-0, this time in the top of the third, before SBU answered back in the bottom half of the inning. With one out in the inning,
Kori Hillenburg was hit by a pitch, stole second, and advanced to third on a groundout.
Rachel Ray then hustled for an infield single, scoring Hillenburg, and tying the game at 1-1. In the fourth, Evans reached on a Newman error and would eventually come home on a fielder's choice to put SBU up 2-1. However, NU responded in the top of the fifth, tying the game up at 2-2, and would score the game winning run in the top of the seventh as SBU would fall 3-2.
The Bearcats will return to action on Tuesday, March 1 when they host Rogers State. Opening pitch of game one of the double-header is set for 1:00 p.m. from the SBU Softball Field in Bolivar.
