SBU Softball Splits with Rockhurst in Two Extra Inning Games

Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University softball team split a pair of extra inning games with Rockhurst on Saturday afternoon, winning game one 4-3 before falling in game two 4-3. At the conclusion of the day, SBU now stands at 4-8 on the season.

In game one the Bearcats jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning. Catlin Evans led the inning off by being hit by a pitch, stole second, and came home on an rbi single by Caitlyn Cooner to put the Bearcats ahead 1-0. Rockhurst tied the contest at 1-1 in the top of the fourth, but SBU quickly re-took the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Kaley Hansen led the inning off with a walk, and a Stormy Christerson single put runners on the corners. The Bearcats broke the tie on an rbi fielder's choice by Kori Hillenburg, taking a 2-1 lead. However, Rockhurst would once again tie the game up in the 6th, and after a scoreless 7th, the Hawks and Bearcats would head to extra innings. Rockhurst would strike first in the extra frame, taking a 3-2 lead before the Bearcats answered back in the bottom half of the inning. After being placed at second to start the inning via international tiebreaker rule, Christerson came home on a wild pitch to tie the game at 3-3. Hillenburg then singled to left, and after a fielder's choice the Bearcats had two on with one out. After a strikeout, Dana Graves hit a walk-off double to centerfield to claim the 4-3 victory.

In the second game of the day SBU once again jumped ahead in the bottom of the first. With one out, Hansen singled, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and came home on an rbi single by Graves. Cooner then doubled to center field, and Graves came home two batters later on an RU error to put SBU up 2-0. Rockhurst would take their first lead of the game with a run in the third and two more in the fifth before SBU responded in the bottom half of the fifth. With two outs in the inning, Hansen reach on a bunt single followed by a Graves single and a Cooner walk to load the bases. SBU then tied the game up on a wild pitch, forcing a second straight extra inning afair. However, Rockhurst would score a run in the top of the 8th as the Bearcats would fall in game two 4-3.

SBU will return to action on Saturday, February 27 when they host Newman in a double-header. Opening pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. from the SBU Softball Field in Bolivar.
