Box Score 2 Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University baseball team picked up a double-header sweep over Truman State on Saturday, taking game one 6-3 before winning game two 10-5. SBU improves to 4-1 on the season, while Truman State, a Division II College World Series team a season ago, drops to 0-2 on the season.
In game one, the Bearcats and Bulldogs were held scoreless through the first three innings of the game before Truman State broke the tie in the top of the fourth to take a 1-0 lead. SBU bounced right back in the bottom of the fourth to take their first lead of the game.
Christian Binger and
Sean Murley led the inning off with back-to-back singles, and were sacrificed over second and third. Binger would tie the game up at 1-1 by coming home on a TSU error, and a
Chance Wolfe single brought home Murley to give the Bearcats a 2-1 lead.
The Bearcats added four more runs in the fifth, extending their lead to 6-1.
Cody Massey led the inning off with, was sacrificed over to third, and came home on an rbi single by Binger. Binger would then come home on another Truman State error, and an rbi groundout by
Hunter Hisky followed by an rbi triple from
Jeff Bouchard would give SBU a 6-1 lead. TSU added two more runs in sixth, but a scoreless seventh pitched by
Brian Womack helped SBU pick up the 6-3 victory. On the mound
Miles Kilgore picked up the victory by going 5.1 innings allowing three runs, while Womack picked up the save in an inning's worth of work.
In the second game of the double-header, the Bearcats were the first to strike in the bottom of the third. With one out in the inning,
Caleb Sneed doubled and two batters later Murley singled to put runners on the corners with two outs.
Tanner Cantrell then hit an rbi single bringing home Sneed, and after a Bouchard single loaded the bases, Wolfe hit a two-rbi single to put SBU up 3-0.
Tim Gurnow kept the inning going with a bases clearing triple, as SBU took a 5-0 lead after three innings of play.
Truman State got a run back in the fourth, and another in the 7th, as SBU led 5-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh. With one out in the inning, Murley doubled and came home a batter later on a Cantrell rbi single to put the Bearcats ahead 6-2. TSU responded in the top of the eighth with three runs, cutting the SBU lead to one at 6-5. However, the Bearcats quickly put added to their lead in the bottom half of the inning. Back-to-back TSU errors put two runners on for Massey who hit an rbi single to give the Bearcats a 7-5 lead. Sneed then hit his first homerun of the year, a three-run shot, to give the Bearcats a 10-5 lead. SBU would cruise through the ninth, as
Luke Lucas picked up his first save on the season in the 10-5 victory. On the mound
Brandon Chernoff picked up the victory by going 6.0 innings while allowing only one run.
SBU will quickly return to action on Sunday, February 21 when they travel to Missouri S&T. Opening pitch of the double-header is set to begin at 12:00 p.m. from Rolla, Missouri.
