Bolivar, Mo. - No. 17 ranked Southwest Baptist University football team is set to host #21 Colorado School of Mines on Saturday in SBU's first ever NCAA Football Playoff appearance.
The Coaches and the All-Time Series
Robert Clardy will begin his second season as the head coach on the Bearcat bench. Coach Clardy has spent the last eight seasons on the coaching staff at Southwest Baptist University, serving many roles during his tenure including Assistant Head Coach, Offensive Coordinator, Quarterbacks Coach, and Wide Receivers Coach. Coach Clardy has produced three All-American's, most recently
Antion McBee off of last year's squad, while seeing his athletes break numerous SBU, GLVC, and NCAA records.
Gregg Brandon is in the second season as the head coach at Colorado School of Mines. Brandon holds a career coaching record of 17-5 and came to Mines after 33 years of coaching experience across all levels of the NCAA.
Saturday's playoff game marks the first meeting between Southwest Baptist and Colorado School of Mines.
Scouting Southwest Baptist
Southwest Baptist comes into the game against Colorado School of Mines 10-1 (7-1 GLVC) after defeating Lincoln 50-12 last weekend. The Bearcats are currently ranked #17 in the latest AFCA NCAA Division II Coaches Poll, #19 in the D2Football.com Poll, and have advanced to the NCAA Playoffs for the first time in program history. Offensively, the Bearcats are led by
Bubba Jenkins who is averaging 141.8 rushing yards/game, while
TJ Edwards is averaging 273.8 yards/game through the air and 54.5 yards/game on the ground.
Kendrick Payne (91.6 yards/game) and
Cassian Foreman (74.6 yards/game) are the top targets in the passing attack. On the defensive side of the ball, the Bearcats are led by
Shaun Hutchinson who averages 8.5 tackles/game to go along with 13.5 tackles for a loss, while
Via Manuma has a team leading 11.5 sacks and 19.0 tackles for a loss.
Scouting Colorado School of Mines
Colorado School of Mines comes into the game against Southwest Baptist 9-2 (8-2 RMAC) after defeating Black Hills State 83-28 their last time out. Mines is ranked #21 in both the AFAC Division II Coaches Poll and the D2Football.com National Poll. Mines is led offensively by Justin Dvorak who averages 364.7 yards per game through the air with 48 touchdowns to only 8 interceptions. His top target is Brody Oliver who averages 130.4 yards receiving per game with 22 touchdowns. On the ground Sam Seeton averages 98.9 yards/game. Defensively Chris Brockman leads CSM with 7.2 tackles/game, 4.5 sacks, and 10.0 total tackles for a loss which are all team highs.
