Springfield, Mo. – The Southwest Baptist University women's basketball team fell on the road at nationally recognized Drury on Tuesday evening 75-66. With the loss SBU drops to 2-1 on the season.
In the opening quarter of play the Lady Panthers jumped out an early 5-2 lead before back-to-back buckets from
Alex Botkin and
Aliyah Isaac gave SBU their first lead of the game at 6-5 with 6:16 remaining in the first quarter. Five one-point lead changes occurred over the next five minutes of play before a three from Botkin fell to give SBU a 13-9 lead with 45 seconds left in the quarter. A DU bucket with 23 seconds left ended the scoring in the first quarter with SBU holding a 13-11 lead.
The Bearcats came out in the second quarter shooting, and back-to-back three's from
Bailey Rezabek extended the SBU lead to 19-11 with 9:00 left in the half. The Lady Panthers responded with 10-2 run over the next four minutes to tie the game at 21-21 with 5:11 to go in the half. The Bearcats came back with a lay-up from Richardson, followed by a three from Botkin, to extend their lead to 26-21 with 4:07 left in the second quarter. DU would continue to hang around, as SBU held a small lead for the remainder of the half before going into the break with a 33-31 lead.
Out of the half the Bearcats and Lady Panthers continued their tight contest, with neither team leading by more than five points during the quarter. After the game was tied at 42-42, Richardson hit a layup followed by a three from Rosenbohm to extend the lead to 47-42 with 3:10 left in the quarter. DU responded with a 8-1 run to take a 50-48 lead with 1:28 left in the quarter. A Rosenbohm jumper tied the game at 50-50, but a DU three would give the Lady Panthers a 53-50 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Drury came out in the fourth quarter hitting another three to take a 56-50 lead. After a
Mackenzie Skupa layup cut the deficit back to four at 56-52, Drury used a small 4-0 to extend their lead to 60-52. The Bearcats continued to fight, and back-to-back baskets from Richardson and Rosenbohm cut the deficit to 70-66 with 50 seconds left. However, SBU was forced to foul and were unable to finish the comeback as SBU fell 75-66.
Megan Rosenbohm had a team high 17 points, while
Alex Botkin chipped in 14 points,
Mackenzie Skupa 13 points, and
Caylee Richardson 10 points in the loss. The Bearcats were led in rebounding by Richardson who had 7 boards while Botkin pulled down 6 rebounds. As a team SBU shot 46.4% from the field, 33.3% from beyond the arc, and 53.8% from the free throw line.
The Bearcats will return to action on Friday, November 17 when they host Central Christian College. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. from the Meyer Sports Center in Bolivar.
