Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University women's basketball team picked up a 73-64 victory over Ouachita Baptist on Saturday afternoon in Bolivar. With the win, the Bearcats move to 2-0 (0-0 MIAA) on the season.
OBU opened the game up with a 3-0 lead, but SBU fought back with points from
Megan Rosenbohm and
Caylee Richardson to take the lead 4-3 with 8:40 remaining in the quarter. After the lead switched back to OBU,
Aliyah Isaac gave SBU the lead back with a jumper just outside the paint (6-5). The Tigers again pulled ahead but free-throws from Henderson and a jumper from
Mackenzie Skupa kept the Bearcats within a single point (11-10 OBU) with 4:29 left in the 1st quarter. Shots sunk for both teams with the Tigers maintaining a slim lead over the Bearcats.
Laura Vierkant found Rosenbohm outside who nailed a 3-pointer putting the score at 17-14 OBU with 1:42 left on the clock. A late free-throw by Skupa cut the Bearcat deficit to 22-15 at the end of the first quarter.
Vierkant opened up the 2nd quarter with a jumper followed quickly by a 3-pointer to pull the Bearcats within 2 points (22-20). Richardson going 2-2 from the free-throw line would tie the game up again 22-22 with 7:20 remaining in the half. A Vierkant 3-pointer and a jumper from Skupa would help SBU take the lead 27-20 with 5:30 on the clock. OBU fought back but SBU remained on top with free-throws from Richardson bringing the score to 30-25. The Tigers again retied the game but not for long as a steal by Rosenbohm coupled with an assist to Vierkant would put the Bearcats up 33-30 with 1:42 left int he half. Layups by Skupa and
Morgan Henderson had the Bearcats heading into halftime leading 37-34.
A quick 4-0 run by OBU gave them the lead early into the second half 39-37.
Alex Botkin hit a 3-pointer to take back the lead followed by 2 layups from Skupa to maintain the lead 46-45 with 5:22 left in the 3rd quarter. The Bearcats were held scoreless until Richardson was able to drive into the paint and connect on a layup to bring the score to 49-46. OBU managed to tie it up again and despite a layup falling for the Bearcats, SBU would head into the final quarter trailing 53-51.
Vierkant continued her strong offensive game by opening up the 4th quarter with a 3-pointer to take back the lead 54-53. A free-throw by Isaac followed by a 3-pointer from Henderson put the Bearcats up 5 (58-53) with 7:40 left in the game. Shots would fall for both teams with SBU maintaining a slim lead over OBU well into the 4th quarter. A jumper by Rosenbohm ignited a 6-0 run by the Bearcats bringing the score to 68-60 with just under 2 minutes left in the game. After going 2-2 from the free-throw line, Vierkant would find Richardson deep in the paint who scored on a layup (72-64 SBU). A final free-throw by Richardson cinched the win for the Bearcats as they took down OBU 73-64.
Laura Vierkant had a remarkable game with a team high 17 points followed closely by
Mackenzie Skupa with 15 points and
Megan Rosenbohm with 11 points.
Caylee Richardson picked up her first double-double of the year with 15 points and a team high 13 rebounds. As a team, the Bearcats were 50.0% from the field, 46.7% from behind the 3-point line, and 76.9% from the free-throw line.
The Bearcats will be back in action Tuesday, November 15th as they face off against the Drury Panthers in the Bank of Bolivar Annual Highway 13 Catfight. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at the O'Reilly Family Event Center in Springfield, Missouri.
