Bolivar, Mo. -Â Southwest Baptist will open up their 2016-17 when they host the SBU Classic. The Bearcats will take on Henderson State on Friday, followed by a Saturday match-up with Ouachita Baptist
The Coaches
SBU head coach
Kelsey Keizer in her third season on the Bearcat bench after leading SBU to their first winning season in 9 years (16-13, 11-11 MIAA) last season. The 11 MIAA wins also marks the second most conference wins in program history. Coach Keizer holds a career coaching record of 27-31, including a 15-26 mark in the MIAA.
Jill Thomas begins her fourth season as the head coach at Henderson State. Thomas holds a career coaching record of 102-94 across seven seasons, while having a 37-46 record at HSU.
Garry Crowder begins his 20th season as the head coach at Ouachita Baptist. Crowder holds a career coaching record of 703-334, spanning across 36 seasons.
Scouting the Bearcats
The Bearcats finished the 2015-16 season 16-13 (11-11 MIAA) while finishing in a tie for 6th in the MIAA. SBU returns its top two scorers in
Caylee Richardson and
Megan Rosenbohm. Richardson, the reigning MIAA Freshman of the Year, averaged a team high 13.0 ppg, a team high 7.8 rpg, and shot an MIAA leading 59.3% from the field. Rosenbohm averaged 10.5 ppg, as well as a team high 1.8 spg. SBU also returns starting seniors
Alex Botkin and
Mackenzie Skupa.
Scouting Henderson State
Henderson State finished the 2015-16 season 14-15 (13-9 GAC) while advancing to the GAC postseason tournament. The Reddies return only five players off of last years squad. Haleigh Henson is the top HSU returner, averaging 11.7 ppg while shooting 35.0% from beyond the arc.Â
Scouting Ouachita Baptist
Ouachita Baptist finished the 2015-16 season 10-18 (7-15 GAC). The Tigers return two of their top three scorers from a season ago in Katie Kapler and Kori Bullard. Kapler averaged 15.0 ppg, 6.7 rpg, and shot 52.4% from the field while Bullard averaged 10.3 ppg and a team leading 7.3 rpg last season.
