Bolivar, Mo. -- The SBU Bearcats continue their road trip this wekeend when they travel to #4 Nebraska-Kearney on Friday, followed by a trip to Fort Hays State on Saturday.
The Coaches
Caira Dortch will begin her third season as the head coach at Southwest Baptist, and holds a career coaching record of 15-44 (8-32 MIAA). Prior to coming to SBU, Dortch previously coached at Drury and Evangel.
Rick Squiers enters his 18th season as the head coach at Nebraska-Kearney. While at UNK, Squiers holds a coaching record of 536-79, advancing to the NCAA tournament in each season. Squiers holds a career collegiate coaching record of 742-138.
Kurt Kohler enters his 8th season as the head coach at Fort Hays State. Kohler holds a career coaching record of 102-132.
Scouting the Opponents
Nebraska-Kearney enters the weekend 26-1 (11-1 MIAA) and are ranked #4 in the latest AFCA Coaches Poll. The Lopers are coming off of a 3-0 sweep over #15 Central Missouri and have won six straight. UNK is led in the attack by Kaitlynn Thomas (3.32 kills/set) and Annie Wolfe (3.15 kills/set) while Tara Ziegelbein (1.06 blocks/set) and Mackenzie Puckett (0.98 blocks/set) are very active at the net. Defensively Ellie McDonnell has a team high 4.66 digs/set, while Lindsey Smith collects 11.81 assists/set.
Fort Hays State enters the match against Southwest Baptist 20-7 (6-6 MIAA) and are coming off of a 3-0 loss to #15 Central Missouri. The Tigers are led by Crystal Whitten who averages a team high 4.07 kills/set, while Rebekah Spainhour averages 3.12 kills/set. Setting duties belong to Hannah Wagy who averages 11.37 assists/set, and on the block Callie Christensen averages 1.19 blocks/set. Defensively the Tigers have three players who average over 3.00 digs/set, led by Ari Jacobsen (3.75 digs/set).
Scouting the Bearcats
Southwest Baptist enters the week 3-22 (0-11 MIAA) on the season, and are coming off of a 3-1 loss to Drury. The Bearcats are led offensively by
Dana Neal who averages a team high 2.39 kills/set, and is third on the team with 2.58 digs/set. Setting duties are split between
Serena Mar (4.80 assists/set) and
Brea Freeman (3.36 assists/set), while
Bailey Baumann averages a team high 3.83 digs/set.
