Box Score Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University men's soccer team fell in another tough overtime loss on Thursday afternoon, dropping the contest 3-2 in double-overtime. With the loss, the Bearcats fall to 0-6 on the season.
The Bearcats and Bison played a tight first half, with neither team getting on the scoreboard as they went into the break tied 0-0. In the second half the Bearcats were the first to strike when
Garrett Gibson continued his strong play by knocking in a goal from 30 yards out, via
Dylan Saib, as SBU took a 1-0 lead in the 62nd minute. However, Harding responded in the 80th minute, and the 82nd minute, to take a 2-1 lead with only 8:54 left in regulation. The Bearcats didn't back down, and after an entry pass into the box by Saib, Gibson manuvered through the defense and placed the ball in the back of the net to knot the game up at 2-2 with 7:03 left in regulation. Neither team would put another goal in the net, forcing overtime. In the first overtime period, Southwest Baptist had many strong opportunities, but were unable to come away with the winning goal as both teams headed to a second overtime. In the second overtime, Harding broke through with a goal in the 103rd minute as SBU fell 3-2 in the contest.
Southwest Baptist will be back in action on Thursday, September 24 when they open up MIAA play against Upper Iowa. Play is set to begin at 2:00 p.m. from the SBU Soccer Field in Bolivar.
