Bolivar, Mo. – The Southwest Baptist University softball team stepped away from MIAA play on Wednesday afternoon to sweep William Jewell 4-1 and 3-2. After the victories, SBU improves to 16-21 on the season.

In game one, William Jewell was the first to strike in the top of the first inning, scoring one run to take an early 1-0 lead. The Bearcats promptly responded in the bottom half of the inning when Brittanie Halquist hit an rbi single up the middle to score Rachel Ray and tie the game up at 1-1. SBU added to their lead in the second when Raigan Ratliff drew a one out walk, and came home one batter later off of an Emily Davis single coupled with a WJC error to put the Bearcats up 2-1. In the third inning, a double from Catlin Evans plated Halquist, followed by an rbi from Ratliff to score Caitlyn Cooner put the Bearcats up 4-1. The lead would hold strong for SBU as Kacey Ayers shut down the Cardinals for the remainder of the game, throwing a complete game to go along with 11 strikeouts, as SBU claimed a 4-1 victory.

In game two, the Bearcats were the first to get on the scoreboard. In the bottom of the second Cooner led the inning off with a double to right field, advanced to third on an error, and came home on a Davis sacrifice fly to put SBU up 1-0. Southwest Baptist extended their lead in the third when Halquist had an rbi groundout to score Kaley Hansen, and in the sixth the Bearcats used another WJC to plate one more run to take a 3-0 lead. After a lightning delay, WJC picked up two runs in the top of the seventh, but the Bearcats would hold on to pick up the 3-2 victory. Earning the win for SBU was Kyra Parker who threw a complete game, allowing two runs to go along with three strikeouts.

SBU will return to action on Friday, April 10 when they travel to Central Oklahoma. Opening pitch of game one of the double-header is set to begin at 2:00 p.m. from Edmond, Oklahoma.
