Box Score Bolivar, Mo. - In their first game against a nationally ranked opponent this season, the Southwest Baptist University baseball team picked up a 17-10 victory over #11 Missouri Southern. With the win, SBU improves to 15-18 on the season.
The Bearcats got the scoring going in the first inning when
Chance Wolfe led the game off with a double to left field, and was brought home two batters later when
Spencer Blacksher doubled to left field to give SBU a 1-0 lead.
Ross Wolfe then smacked a two-run homerun over the right field wall to put SBU up 3-0 after an inning of play.
In the second inning, SBU continuted to add to their lead. Pirrello led the inning off with a single to center field before
Trevor Bowling hit the Bearcats' second homerun of the day to put SBU up 5-0. After a pitching change, the Bearcats had back-to-back singles from
Chance Wolfe and
Christian Binger before
Spencer Blacksher cleared the bases on double to left center to extend the lead to 7-0. Blacksher then came home on a
Ross Wolfe rbi double to left field, followed by an rbi single by
Zach Snodgrass to put SBU up 9-0. In Bowling's second at-bat of the inning, he hit an rbi double to left field to go up 10-0.
Missouri Southern got on the scoreboard in the third, fourth, and fifth inning as SBU lead 10-5 going into the bottom half of the fifth.
Chance Wolfe led the inning off with a homerun to left center followed two batters later, when Blacksher also hit a solo homerun to put SBU up 12-5. MSSU got one back in the sixth before the Bearcats were able to plate two more runs to extend their lead. With one out in the inning,
Cory Canterbury hit SBU's fifth homerun of the day, a solo shot to left field. Back-to-back doubles from Bowling and
Chance Wolfe put the Bearcats up 14-6. Southern then scored four straight runs, cutting the SBU lead to 14-10, before the Bearcats responded in the bottom of the eighth. SBU loaded the bases with one out in the inning, and eventually scored all three runners off of a wild pitch, passed ball, and a Binger sacrifice fly to take a 17-10 lead. SBU would put MSSU down 1-2-3 in the ninth to claim the 17-10 victory. On the mound
Luke Lucas picked up his second win of the season.
The Bearcats will be back in action on Friday, April 10 when they begin a four-game series at Lindenwood. Opening pitch of the nine inning contest is set to begin at 6:00 p.m. from St. Charles, Missouri.
