Box Score 2 Edmond, Okla. - For the first time in Southwest Baptist University baseball history, the Bearcats have won 20 games for the fourth consecutive season after a pair of victories over Central Oklahoma on Saturday. SBU claimed a 9-8 victory, finishing up game one which was suspensed from Friday, while taking the second game of the day 10-8 to improve to 20-26 (13-21 MIAA) on the season.
In game one Central Oklahoma jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the first inning, with the game remaining a 1-0 UCO advantage through three innings of play. In the top of the fourth, the Bearcats got on the scoreboard when
Ross Wolfe hit an rbi single through the right side, scoring
Christian Binger, and drawing even at 1-1. UCO quickly responded with a run in the fourth and six more in the fifth as SBU trailed 7-1 after five innings of play.
The Bearcat offense starting rolling from that point forward.
Chance Wolfe led the sixth inning off with a infield single, followed by a Binger double down the left field line, and a
Spencer Blacksher walk to load the bases.
Ross Wolfe then singled to left field, scoring two runners, and the Bearcats were able to add another run later in the inning off of a UCO error as they trailed 7-4 after six. After getting out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth, the SBU offense went back to work in the top of the seventh.
Chance Wolfe led the inning off with a single to center field, Binger was hit by a pitch, and two batters later
Cory Canterbury hit a big two-out double to left center which scored both of the base runners. Canterbury then advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored later in the same at-bat on another wild pitch as the game was tied 7-7. At the conclusion of the seventh inning, lightning struck and forced the game to be suspended until Saturday afternoon.
On Saturday, the Bearcats led the top of the eighth off with a
Jake Vore walk, followed by a two-run homerun to right field by
Zach Snodgrass to put SBU up 9-7.
Sam Vergara pitched both Saturday innings for SBU, picking up the save, while
Evan Stransky picked up the victory, as SBU would claim a 9-8 game one win.
In game two of the series UCO once again jumped ahead early, leading 2-0 after three innings of play. The SBU offense once again started going in the top of the fourth inning. Blacksher led off with a single up the middle, followed by a
Ross Wolfe walk, before Canterbury hit an rbi single up the middle. The Bearcats tacked on another run when
Ross Wolfe scored on a double-play, before
Caleb Sneed singled up the middle to bring home Canterbury as SBU took a 3-2 lead. SBU added another run in the fifth when Binger hit an rbi single which scored
Chance Wolfe as SBU led 4-2.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Bronchos plated five runs to take a 7-4 advantage, but SBU responded with a strong inning of their own in the top of the seventh. Binger led the inning off with a single to left field, followed by a Blacksher double down the left field line, before Canterbury hit a three-run homerun to right center to tie the game up at 7-7. SBU then used a
Trevor Bowling walk, Vore single, and Sneed walk to load the bases when Snodgrass hit a two-rbi single up the middle to give SBU a 9-7 lead. UCO got one run back in the bottom half of the inning, but a Snodgrass rbi double in the top of the ninth helped secure the 10-8 game two victory.
Matt Dye picked up the win out of the bullpen, throwing 4.2 innings while allowing only two hits to go along with five strikeouts.
The Bearcats will return to action on Sunday, April 26 for the final two games of their last MIAA series of the season. Opening pitch against UCO is set for 12:00 p.m. from Edmond, Oklahoma.
