SBU Baseball Collects 22 Hits in DH Loss to Missouri Western

Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University baseball team fell in a double-header against Missouri Western on Friday afternoon to finish off their regular season home portion of the schedule. The Bearcats dropped game one 9-6 before falling 8-6 in game two. SBU's record now stands at 18-24 (11-21 MIAA) on the season.

In game one Missouri Western jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first half inning of play. The Bearcats responded in the bottom of the first when Chance Wolfe led the game off with a double to left center, and came home a couple of batters later on an rbi fielder's choice from Ross Wolfe. MWSU tacked on another run in the top of the second, before the Bearcats scored a couple more in the third. Chance Wolfe and Ross Wolfe led the inning off with back-to-back singles before Spencer Blacksher hit an rbi single as SBU trailed 4-2. Ross Wolfe then singled to load the bases before Trevor Bowling hit an rbi single as SBU trailed 4-3 after three. In the top of the fourth, Missouri Western tacked on three more runs before SBU got back on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth. Caleb Sneed led the inning off with a walk, followed by a Chance Wolfe single, before Christian Binger hit a three-run homerun to left center as SBU trailed 7-6 after six. The Bearcats were unable to take a lead in game one, as they eventually fell 9-6.

In game two the Bearcats were the first to get on the scoreboard when Binger hit his second homerun of the day, a solo shot to left field, as SBU went up 1-0 in the first. The Bearcats added another run in the second, off of a Kyle Jochems rbi single to right field, as SBU held a 2-0 lead after two innings of play. MWSU responded back with two runs in the third, before SBU re-took the lead in the fifth. With one out in the inning, Binger and Blacksher hit back-to-back singles, followed by an rbi single by Ross Wolfe to give SBU a 3-2 lead. Bowling then had an rbi fielder's choice, extending their lead to 4-2, but Missouri Western put up five runs the following innings as SBU trailed 7-4. Southwest Baptist continued to hang around, coming back within one of the Griffons in the bottom of the sixth. Jochems led the inning off with a single to right center, followed by a Zach Snodgrass double to left center to put runners on second and third. Back-to-back wild pitches plated both Jochems and Snodgrass as SBU trailed 7-6. However, the Bearcats were unable to push another run across the plate as they would end up falling 8-6 in game two.

Southwest Baptist will return to action on Tuesday, April 21 when they travel to William Jewell. Opening pitch of the double-header is set to begin at 3:00 p.m. from Liberty, Missouri.
